Lady Bears fall at East Central

The Lady Bears dropped a heartbreaker in the opener of their South Division doubleheader at East Central Tuesday as the Lady Warriors scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to pick up a 2-1 win. The hosts then came out firing on all cylinders in the nightcap to win 13-1 in five innings.

In game one, the game was tied after the third inning as both teams scored in their half of the frame. Sophomore Tipheri Grimes blasted a homer for Southwest (4-16, 2-8). Grimes added a single as did Brooke Szigeti for the only other hits by the Lady Bears.

The loss came despite the pitching performance of Rachel Smith. The freshman right hander went the distance, allowing only four hits while striking out eight and walking five.

The Lady Warriors (23-8, 7-3) won easily in the finale as they scored once in the first inning and added five runs in the third and seven in the fourth. Grimes provided the only run for Southwest when she added another solo homer in the top of the fourth.

Szigeti had another single while Katie Allen, Grace Bravata and Aseye Attipoe also hit safely for the Lady Bears. Smith started the game for Southwest before giving way to Emily Wood, who took the loss, in the third inning.

Southwest returns to the diamond Thursday as they travel to Pearl River for a 2:00 doubleheader.
