Bears split with fourth-ranked Hinds

The Southwest Bears picked up a 6-4 win in game two Saturday against the visiting Hinds Eagles to gain a split in their MACJC South Division doubleheader. Another quality pitching performance by Zach Rowell went by the wayside in the opener as the fourth-ranked Eagles took advantage of four Southwest errors to take a 9-4 win.

The Bears fell behind 3-0 before making the score 3-2 in the bottom of the third. With one out, Luke Gipson and Darron McKigney both singled and Chance Schmidt walked to load the bases. Gipson then scored when Johnny McKenzie reached base on a fielder’s choice and McKigney reached home on a two-out Hinds error.

Southwest (11-15, 4-2 South) took a 5-3 lead in the fourth.  After Gipson led off the inning with another single and McKigney walked, both later scored on a two-out single from German Hays. Hays then moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Kade Scivicque.

After the Eagles (19-6, 4-4 South) scored in the top of the fifth to make the score 5-4, Southwest answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame. Alex Marshall started the inning with a triple and later scored on a wild pitch.

Trey Setzer (2-3) went five innings on the mound to pick up the win for Southwest. He surrendered four runs on seven hits while striking out three and walking three. Scivicque gave up one hit and one walk while striking out one in two innings of relief to pick up his second save of the year. McKenzie also had a single in the game.

Thanks to help from the Bears, Hinds took an 8-0 lead after their first three at bats in game one with all of the runs being unearned. All of the Southwest errors came during that span with two of them after two batters were out.

Southwest made the score 8-2 in the bottom of the third when Chris Gill led off with a walk and Schmidt followed with a single. McKenzie then followed with a walk to load the bases. Gill scored when Hays reached base on a fielder’s choice. With Schmidt moving to third on the play, he scored on a Scivicque ground out. The Bears made it 8-3 in the fifth inning when Hays doubled with two outs and scored on Scivicque’s triple.

Hinds scored a solo run in the top of the sixth to make the score 9-3 before Marshall led off the bottom of the seventh with a pinch-hit home run to left field, his second round-tripper of the year, for the final run of the game.

The loss overshadowed the job Rowell (2-2) did for the Bears. In his three innings of work, Rowell surrendered only four hits while striking out one and walking two.

Chase Ward went the final four innings for Southwest, giving up one earned run on four hits. He struck out one batter while walking two. Connor Goodspeed had two singles for Southwest while McKenzie and Aaron Moore also hit safely.

Southwest returns to action Wednesday when they travel to Perkinston to face the Mississippi Gulf Coast Bulldogs. Game one of the doubleheader is set for 3:00.
