Bears sweep visiting East Central

The home standing Southwest Bears rode the arms of Kade Scivicque and Trey Setzer to a doubleheader sweep of South Division foe East Central Saturday afternoon. The Bears took the opener 5-0 behind Scivicque’s complete-game four-hitter and the finale 7-2 behind Setzer’s five-inning, three-hit performance.

With the wins, the Bears move to 10-12 on the campaign and 3-1 in the South. East Central fell to 12-10 overall and 0-2. The Warriors came into the day having won eight of their last nine games, including a sweep of North Division power Northwest on Wednesday.

Southwest went on top 1-0 in the first inning of game one when Johnny McKenzie led off with a walk, moved to second on Jake Martin’s sacrifice bunt and scored on a Luke Gipson single.

Scivicque picked up some help from centerfielder Chris Gill in the fourth inning. With one out, the Oak Forest graduate blasted a home run, his first of the season, over the left field fence that also scored German Hays and Chance Schmidt and gave the Bears a 4-0 advantage.

The final run for Southwest came in the fifth inning when a Darron McKigney sacrifice bunt advanced Jawon Jackson from first base to second. Jackson then moved to third on a wild pitch and raced home on an East Central throwing error.

Scivicque was the star of the game for the Bears. Picking up his first win on the mound against one loss (he also has one save), he gave up a first-inning single then retired 12 batters in a row before allowing another single in the fifth inning. He gave up two more singles in the seventh, but retired the final two batters he faced to secure the win. He finished the game with six strikeouts and issued only one walk.

Hays finished the game with two singles while Scivicque and Martin also hit safely.
The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the finale when Aaron Moore led off the inning with a double and scored on a Connor Goodspeed sacrifice fly.

Two more runs crossed the plate for Southwest in the fourth inning when Moore singled then scored on a one-out bases-loaded single by Hays. A Schmidt bunt single then allowed McKigney, who reached base after being hit by a pitch, to score to put the Bears up 3-0.

After the Warriors picked up a run in the top of the fifth, Southwest answered with four in the bottom half of the frame to go up 7-1. Goodspeed singled with one out to plate Jackson and Moore, and then scored two batters later on an East Central error. A Schmidt sacrifice fly allowed Alex Marshall, who had been hit by a pitch, to also cross the plate.

Zach Rowell pitched the sixth inning in relief for the Bears, striking out one batter and walking one, before giving way to Jason Milton. Milton gave up the Warriors’ final run while striking out two batters and giving up one hit.

In hit five innings on the mound, Setzer (1-3) allowed only three hits while striking out seven batters and walking only one. Goodspeed added a second single in the game while Scivicque and Marshall also hit safely.

The Bears hit the road for their next contests as they travel to Scooba Tuesday for a 4:00 doubleheader.
