Bears end season on down note

Sophomore night did not go off as planned at Southwest Mississippi Community College Thursday night as the MACJC basketball season came to an end for the Lady Bears in a 70-56 loss to visiting Hinds. For the Bears, their 79-65 loss was doubly disappointing as it kept them from advancing to the state and regional playoffs. The Lady Bears ended their year at 3-20 overall and 0-12 in the South Division while the Bears finished the season 10-13 and 5-7.

After Southwest’s Parker Moore hit a basket to tie the game at 4-4 with 16:36 to play in the half, the Bulldogs (8-15, 6-6) quickly regained the lead and took a 37-25 lead into the half.

The second half was virtually all Hinds as the Bulldogs went up by as many as 18 points, 67-49, with 4:30 left in the game and extended the lead to 20 points, 79-59, with 0:55 to play. The Bears’ Mikel Henry hit a two-pointer with 0:06 left in the game provided the final margin.

“It wasn’t a good night to play our worst game of the year,” said Southwest head coach Casey Carter after the game, “and that’s exactly what happened tonight.” The Bears hit only 26 of 75 field goals on the night (35%) to Hinds’ 25 of 52 (48%).

“You’ve got to give Hinds credit for coming into a hostile atmosphere and playing a good game,” Carter went on. “This game does not tell the story of how our season went, but it will be on our minds for a while. I just hate it for my players. In a couple of days when this feeling wears off, we will be able to see the progress we made in one year.”

Mark Bridgewater led the way for Southwest with 22 points on the night. Wesley Blackmon was also in double figures with 15 points. Devin Flowers added eight points while Moore had seven. Henry chipped in six points while Josh Brannon had four, Michael Hall had two and Cory Lacy had one. The Bears hit eight of 15 free throws.

Hinds was led by Dominique Brown’s 27 points. The Bulldogs were good on 23 of 27 free throws.
