Southwest softball suffers opening day losses

The 2012 softball season started on a down note for the Southwest Lady Bears as they dropped a pair of games in the Meridian tournament. Heartland Community College (Normal, IL) defeated Southwest 5-0 while Northeast Mississippi was a 4-3 victor. The Lady Bears are scheduled to open the home portion of their schedule Tuesday by hosting Meridian. Game one of the twinbill is set for 3:00.

The Lady Bears were held to four singles in the loss to Heartland. Aseye Attipoe, Grace Bravata, Brooke Szigeti and Mandy Szigeti all singled. Pitcher Rachel Smith took the loss.

In their second game, Southwest fell behind 4-0 in the top of the first inning. The Lady Bears picked up their first run of the season, and made the score 4-1, in the bottom of the frame when Brooke Szigeti reached first on a single, stole second and scored when Tipheri Grimes reached base on a Northeast error. Southwest made the score 4-3 in the third inning when Mandy Szgeti singled and scored on a Grimes home run. But, that was as close as the Lady Bears could come.

Pitcher Emily Booth was saddled with the loss for Southwest. Attipoe and Camden Graham both had base hits.
