Bears pick up important win

The Southwest Bears ended two frustrating losing streaks and picked up a badly needed win Monday night as they defeated home standing East Central 96-76 in Decatur.

The Bears picked up their first win in four games and first in five road games (only the second in 10 road trips this season) to move to 9-11 overall and 4-5 in the MACJC South Division. The win helped Southwest fortify its hold on fourth place in the South.

The Bears went up 2-0 early on a Devin Flowers basket and maintained the lead the rest of the night. A three-pointer from Parker Moore gave them a 23-10 advantage with 12:45 to go in the first half. A Christopher Lawrence two-pointer put Southwest on top by 16 points, 43-27, at the 3:16 mark and they took a 15-point, 50-35, lead into the locker room at the break.

Southwest was never threatened in the second half, going up by as many as 26 points, 83-57, with 7:38 to play in the game on a Cory Lacy jumper. Lacy ended the night with a game-high 21 points.

“It just feels good to win a game after losing three straight,” said Southwest head coach Casey Carter. “In a road game against a struggling team in no environment, my guys showed a lot of energy, attention to detail and determination and that’s what impressed me the most.”

“We put in the work Friday and Sunday (in practice) that allowed us to be successful tonight. We’ll enjoy this win tonight (but) starting tomorrow we get locked in on a really good Gulf Coast team coming into our place Thursday.” Gulf Coast currently leads the South Division with a 10-0 record and is 19-2 overall.

Emphasizing the importance of Thursday’s game, Carter said “We need a great turnout from out students and our community that shows up early and is loud. We get a ton of energy from our fans.”

Four other Bears joined Lacy in double figures on the night. Mark Bridgewater maintained his league-leading 18.2 points per game average with 19 points while Lawrence had 14 points and Wesley Blackmon had 13. Moore scored 10 points.

Mikel Henry netted seven points in the game with Flowers adding six. Michael Hall registered four points and Josh Brannon added two. The Bears hit 14 of 20 free throws.
East Central (1-18, 1-8) was led by Jimmie Broomfield’s 14 points. The Warriors made 12 of 20 free throws.

Thursday’s game is set to get underway at approximately 7:00. The ladies’ game tips off at 5:00.
