Bears take a high-scoring win over visiting Delgado

Southwest ended the 2012 portion of the basketball schedule on a high note Tuesday as they swept visiting Delgado. The Lady Bears prevailed 65-55 while the Bears won a high-scoring affair, 108-99.

With the wins, both Southwest teams go into the Christmas break with 5-5 overall records (they are both 0-2 in the MACJC’s South Division).

The men’s game was a hard-fought battled from the start. After falling behind early, 4-0, the Bears came back to go up 8-6 on a Deville Smith three-pointer with 17:41 to play in the first half.

After the Dolphins (8-7) tied the game, 8-8, with 16:43 on the clock, Southwest went on a 15-5 run, capped by Devion Smith’s basket, to go up 23-13 with 11:12 remaining.

The teams traded baskets before Southwest again went up by 10, 36-26, on a Quintarious Porter jumper with 4:41 to play. The Dolphins then found their offense as they went on a 20-9 run to close out the half and take a 46-45 lead into the locker room.

The second half was as exciting as the first, with six ties and 11lead changes in the first 11:54. The Bears took the lead for good, 76-75, on Corey Williams’ two free throws with 9:06 left in the game.

Southwest then outscored the Dolphins 21-12 to go up 97-87 with 3:46 to go and went unchallenged the rest of the game to take the nine-point victory.

“I’m really proud of our guys,” said Southwest head coach Casey Carter, “for being able to end the semester on a positive note. The attention to detail was better tonight than it’s been even though we gave up a bunch of points. I’m really proud of Deville and Donovan Ross for their efforts on both ends (of the court).”

“Now,” Carter continued, “we have three weeks off (for the Christmas break) and we’ve got to get back (afterwards) and use the positives we gained from tonight to get us started next semester.”

Deville Smith led the Bears with 27 points on the night, on 7-11 field goal shooting (3-5 from three-point range) and 10-16 from the free throw line. Ross hit seven of eight field goals and 10 of 12 free throws to scored 24 points. Porter was also in double figures with 13 points.

Devin Flowers added nine points in the game while Mark Bridgewater and Deione Weeks both netted eight. Corey Williams scored seven points, Mikel Henry had five and Devion Smith had four. Donovan James recorded two points while Christopher Lawrence had one. The Bears made 37 of 50 free throws.

Delgado’s Melvin Davis led all scorers with 34 points. The Dolphins made 24 of 29 free throws.
