Bears cruise over Meridian

It was a great night all around for the Southwest basketball teams Monday as both teams came away with easy wins over visiting Meridian. The Lady Bears came out on top 82-63 while the Bears were 91-52 victors.

The Bears (1-0) were in control of their game from the get go, scoring the first 10 points of the game before Meridian (0-2) got on board on a Will Sheriff free throw with 17:40 to play in the half.

A Devin Flowers basket with 3:35 left in the first half gave Southwest a 35-point lead, 46-11, and the home team went into the break with a 52-21 advantage. The second half was more of the same as the Bears built their lead to 48 points, 84-36, with 6:32 left in the game and they went on to the 39-point win.

“It just feels good to get a win,” said Southwest head coach Casey Carter. “This was a game that we needed to dominate in all facets and we did that from the opening tip. When we are locked in defensively and playing with energy, we will be a tough team to deal with and we showed that tonight.”

“I was proud of our main guys (starters),” Carter continued, “with their attitudes throughout the game when they didn’t play as much as they usually do and I was proud of our bench guys (for) playing with the same intensity that the starters began the game with.”

Mark Bridgewater scored 19 points, and had four steals, to pace the Southwest offense. Deville Smith added 15 points, along with three steals and three assists and a blocked shot. Devin Flowers and Quintarius Porter were also in double figures, both with 10 points. Flowers also blocked two shots while Porter blocked three.

Donovan Ross and Devion Smith both netted seven points while Corey Williams scored six. Christopher Lawrence and Cordaryl Weathersby both registered five points in the game while Tyree McDonald picked up three. Weathersby also had five assists while Lawrence blocked a shot. Mikel Henry and Donavon James both scored two points.

Sheriff topped the Meridian offense with 20 points. The Eagles hit 13 of 20 free throws.

Southwest goes on the road for its next action Thursday as they travel to Moorhead to take on Mississippi Delta. Tip-off is set for 6:00 for the ladies and 8:00 for the men.
