Bears drop 78-70 decision to Holmes

Southwest split a non-division doubleheader with visiting Holmes Monday night, falling 78-70 in the men’s contest and winning the ladies’ game 58-48.

After a Donovan Ross free throw gave the Bears (4-3) an early 1-0 lead in the finale, Holmes (5-3) quickly took control and scored 17 of the next 23 points to take a 17-7 lead with 11:45 to play in the first half.

Southwest cut their deficit to five points, 19-14, on Corey Williams’ bucket with 9:01 on the clock. But, the Holmes quickly boosted their lead back to double digits, 31-19, with 3:31 to play before the break. A Williams’ free throw pulled the Bears back to within six, 32-26, with only 0:43 to go before the half. The Bulldogs then took a seven point lead, 34-27, into the locker room at the break.

The Bears refused to go away quietly in the second half as they outscored Holmes 19-12 and tied the game at 46-46 on Deione Weeks’ layup with 12:07 left in the game.

Holmes quickly regained control of the game, going on a 15-3 run, to take a 61-48 lead with 5:40 left in the game. Southwest cut the Bulldogs’ lead down to five points on three separate occasions the remainder of the game. But, each time, the visitors were able to answer as they escaped with the eight-point win.

“This was not a good game for us, coming off the Thanksgiving break,” said Southwest head coach Casey Carter, “because they’re (Holmes) as physical a team as anybody in the league. But, (it’s) a good lesson for us in the long run.”

“We have got to be more physical as a team,” Carter continued, “and also respond better to adversity. I did like the way Corey Williams fought tonight and showed some grit.”

Williams, a 6’ 2” freshman guard, came off the bench to hit all seven of his field goals and all five free throws to lead four Bears in double figures with 20 points. Deville Smith had 15 points while Mikel Henry and Donovan Ross scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Devin Flowers and Deione Weeks both score five points for the Bears while Mark Bridgewater and Quintarius Porter both netted two. Southwest was good on 22 of 34 free throws.

Holmes was led by Demarcus Wilson’s 31 points and Deandre Scott’s 13. The Bulldogs hit 20 of 32 free throws.

Southwest opens MACJC South Division play Thursday when they host Jones County. Game times are 5:30 for the ladies and 7:15 for the men.
