Bears fall at Northwest

Making the long trip up I-55 to Senatobia, the Southwest basketball teams started the 2012-13 season on a down note Thursday as they dropped a pair of non-division games to host Northwest Mississippi Community College. The Lady Bears fell 66-58 while a furious second-half rally allowed the Rangers to come from behind to defeat the Southwest men 98-94.

Southwest was left wondering what might have been in the men’s game. After a hard-fought first half, the Bears went into the locker room with a 49-48 advantage.

In the second half, the Bears’ lead grew to as many as 13 points on two separate occasions. The second, 86-73, came on Deville Smith’s free throw with 5:58 left in the game.

But, the Rangers would not go away and they slowly crept back into the game. Outscoring the Bears 16-3 over the next 2:30, Northwest tied the game at 89-89 on Tevin Moore’s bucket with 2:21 on the clock. They then took a 90-89 lead on Moore’s free throw with 1:26 to play and were managed to hold on for the victory.

“The one thing we’ll take away from tonight,” Southwest head coach Casey Carter said, “is that we have to finish games. The first half was as tight of a battle as I’ve been a part of. We were able to come out in the second half and put a lot of pressure on them as we grew a double-digit lead. (But), you have to give Bubba (Northwest head coach Bubba Skelton) and his guys credit for hanging in there and finishing the game like they did.”

“I was pleased with every guy who set foot on the floor (for us)”, Carter went on. “We will learn from this defeat and get better starting tomorrow.”

The Bears’ Deville Smith hit 8 of 18 field goals, and went 6-7 from the free throw line, to lead all scorers with 24 points. Mark Bridgewater added 17 points while Devin Flowers and Donovan Ross both were in double figures with 14 points.

Quintarius Porter added eight points for Southwest with Corey Williams scoring seven and Mikel Henry six. Devion Smith netted three points and Christopher Lawrence added one. The Bears hit 27 of 42 free throws.

Jordan Hulsey led the Rangers with 16 points. He and his teammates finished the game 28 of 41 from the free throw line.

Southwest returns to the court Monday when they open the home portion of their schedule against Meridian. Game times are 5:30 for the ladies and 7:15 for the men.
