Bear Football takes on Northeast on the road

Southwest Football traveled to Booneville on Thursday, September 3rd to play Northeast in game two of the season.

A slow first quarter was high lighted by a 28 yard catch by #17 Deori Pope who had 2 catches for 76 yards in week one for Southwest.

The first quarter ended with a score of 0-6 favoring Northeast.

Bear defense showed out to start the second quarter with a sack from #27 Antwon Thomas that led to a Northeast punt.

The offense couldn't find its rhythm in the first half as the Bears went into halftime trailing 0-12 to Northeast.

Northeast got the ball to start the second half and began driving down the field before Southwest got its first turnover of the season on an interception by #19 Bernard Lackey who returned it from his own 24 to the 48-yard line.

The interception sparked life into the Bears as the offense began to march down the field.

Big catches of 17 yards and 16 yards by #1 Zay Martin and #6 Tahj Williby moved the chains for Southwest as they worked closer towards the redzone.

A few short passes later led to back to back handoffs to freshman running back #0 Ronde Baker.

The first handoff went for 6 yards and the second went for 8 yards straight into the endzone for the first Bear Touchdown of the season by Ronde Baker.

This moved the score to 7-12 after the extra point with 5:34 remaining in the third quarter.

Northeast tried to answer back immediately with a long pass that would have been a touchdown but was negated by a critical block in the back penalty.

The Bears capitalized on the opportunity and forced a turnover on downs in the redzone after a big tackle for loss by #2 Jordan Magee and a 4th down pass breakup in the endzone by #4 JJ Moultrie.

Southwest would punt to end the third quarter still trailing 7-12.

The fourth quarter started with each team forcing the other to punt.

A sack by #36 Keviyon Lamons led to yet another Northeast punt in the fourth quarter.

After getting the ball back, the Bear offense started making strides on the back of Will Smith who rushed for 12 and 14 yards on the drive.

Unfortunately, an untimely pick-six for Jakhari Williams after a great defensive play by Northeast moved the score to 7-18 in favor of Northeast.

Southwest stopped the 2-pt try to keep it an 11-point game and give themselves a chance.

The Bears got the ball back with 6:34 remaining in the game and began marching down the field once again.

After capitalizing on a pass interference call against Northeast, Zay Martin had back to back catches for 18 and 13 yards to keep the chains moving for Southwest.

Back to back 6-yard rushes by Will Smith and #12 Nyrikius Johnson pushed the Bears into the redzone before Jakhari Williams found #1 Zay Martin for a 13 yards touchdown to make the score 13-18.

A pass interference penalty on the 2-pt try gave the Bears a second chance and moved them closer to the goal line.

With heavy personnel on the field, Southwest punched in the 2-pt try with running back Nyrikius Johnson to cut the lead to 15-18.

With no timeouts left, Southwest attempted an onside kick but was unsuccessful.

With the help of the 2-minute timeout, Southwest forced Northeast to punt and got the ball back on their own 20 with 0:15 left in the game.

After scrambling out of the pocket, Jakhari Williams heaved it down the field to find #17 Deori Pope for a 69-yard connection.

With the ball at the 11-yard line, the offense had to rush down the field to get set to get off one final play.

With 0:02 left and no time to clock it, the ball was snapped and Jakhari Williams attempted to find #6 Tahj Williby on the front pylon, but it fell incomplete and the game ended with a final score of 15-18.

Jakhari Williams finished the game with 279 passing yards and 1 Passing Touchdown.

Will Smith led the team in rushing with 28 yards. Ronde Baker followed with 27 yards and 1 Rushing Touchdown.

Deori Pope led the team with 97 receiving yards on 2 catches. Zay Martin was behind him with 71 receiving yards on 7 catches.

Keviyon Lamons, Antwon Thomas, Jordan Magee, Janarious Harris, and Caleb Bryant all had a sack in the game.

Bernard Lackey had an interception.

The Bears (0-2) will play Mississippi Delta at home on Thursday, September 10th.
