Bears shutout No. 24 Gulf Coast

Southwest Mississippi Baseball hosted the No. 24 ranked Gulf Coast Bulldogs on Wednesday, April 8th in a doubleheader that saw the Bears win 12-2 and 5-0.

Matt Newman started on the mound for the Bears in game one.

Newman pitched 5.0 innings with 5 strikeouts and only 1 run allowed picking up the win for Southwest.

Easton Boyte pitched the final 2.0 innings with 1 strikeout and no hits allowed.

Southwest took command of game one early only allowing 4 hits throughout the game.

After five innings, the Bears led 5-1 over Gulf Coast.

The first run of the game came on a Tanner Moore single that scored Drew Swan. The next on a Jonathan Miller single that again scored Drew Swan.

Another Tanner Moore single scored Jonathan Miller to put Southwest up 3-1.

In the fifth the Bears put up 2 more runs on singles by Robbie Hokamp and Sam Tumminello.

Leading 5-2, the Bears put up a massive 7 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to go up 12-2 over the Bulldogs.

Southwest amassed the 7 runs through a combination of singles, walks, and sacrifice flies in an inning that saw Tristain Haynes and Tanner Moore get two at bats each.

Easton Boyte put down three straight batters in the top of the seventh to secure the 12-2 run rule victory for the Bears ending the game early.

Tanner Moore and Sam Tumminello led the team with 3 hits each. JD Hidalgo, Justin Domiano (2B), and Drew Swan all had 2 hits. Jonathan Miller, Tristain Haynes, and Robbie Hokamp all had 1.

Jonathan Miller, Sam Tumminello, Robbie Hokamp, and Tanner Moore each had 2 RBIs. Hayes Loper, JD Hidalgo, and Drew Swan all had 1.

Rhyson Carroway started at pitcher in game two for Southwest.

Carroway pitched 3.2 innings with 2 strikeouts and no runs allowed and picked up the win for the Bears.

Nik Carney came in for the next 2.1 innings and picked up 4 strikeouts with no runs allowed.

Dom Smith pitched the final inning putting down 3 straight batters with 2 strikeouts to secure the 5-0 win for the Bears.

Southwest put up 3 runs in the second and 2 runs in the third to go up 5-0 then kept Gulf Coast scoreless the rest of the game.

All 3 runs in the second inning came on a bases clearing double by Tanner Moore.

In the next inning, Justin Domiano and Robbie Hokamp scored on a dropped third strike to Jonathan Miller that turned into an error by the catcher.

Those 2 runs gave the Bears a 5-0 edge over the Bulldogs that they'd hold for the rest of the game.

Tanner Moore and Hayes Loper led the team with 2 hits each. Robbie Hokamp also had 1 hit.

Tanner Moore had 3 RBIs and Jonathan miller had 1.

Tristain Haynes stole a base in the contest.

"We knew that yesterday was a big day for us, and we showed up and played really well. I thought we handled our emotions well and competed on a high level in all facets of the game," said Head Coach Jack Edmonson.

The Bears (26-16, 10-8*conference) have the weekend off before traveling to Decatur on Tuesday, April 14th to play East Central in a doubleheader.
