Bear Baseball beats Northwest at home

Southwest Mississippi Baseball hosted Northwest on Friday, April 3rd in a doubleheader that saw Southwest lose game one 1-4 and win game two 9-3.

Southwest lost game one 1-4 with the only run coming on a Jonathan Miller single that scored Luke Simmons.

Matt Newman started on the mound for the Bears in game one.

Newman had 1 strikeout in 4.2 innings pitched with only 2 runs allowed and took the loss for Southwest.

Andrew Hoff pitched 1.2 innings with 2 strikeouts and 1 run allowed.

Luke Simmons came in for relief pitching 0.2 innings before Easton Boyte finished the game.

Boyte pitched the final 2.0 innings with 4 strikeouts and 1 run allowed.

Tanner Moore(2B), Justin Domiano, Drew Swan, and Jonathan Miller each had 1 hit in game one.

Justin Domiano (x2), Landon French, Luke Simmons, and Tristain Haynes all stole bases in the contest.

In game two, Alden Spencer started at pitcher for the Bears.

Spencer pitched 1.2 innings with 1 strikeout and picked up the win for Southwest.

Nik Carney came in for the next 4.2 innings and recorded 7 strikeouts with only 1 hit allowed.

Dom Smith pitched the final 1.0 inning with 2 strikeouts of his own and 1 hit allowed.

Tanner Moore set the tone for the Bears with a solo homerun on the second pitch thrown to Southwest in the bottom of the first inning.

Kickstarted with a 1-0 lead, the Bears added 2 more runs in the first on singles from Sam Tumminello and Jonathan Miller to move to 3-0.

Southwest added 3 more runs in the second on a Hayes Loper single and Robbie Hokamp double pushing the lead to 6-2.

Leading 6-3, the Bears added 3 more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Two runs came on a Hayes Loper single and the last run came on a Robbie Hokamp single that gave Southwest a 9-3 lead.

Dom Smith struck out two in the top of the seventh to secure the 9-3 Southwest win.

Robbie Hokamp led the team with 3 hits followed by Hayes Loper and Drew Swan with 2 hits apiece. Tanner Moore, Sam Tumminello, Jonathan Miller, Landon French, and Tristain Haynes each had 1 hit.

Tanner Moore had 1 homerun, and Robbie Hokamp had 2 doubles.

Hayes Loper and Robbie Hokamp each had 3 RBIs.

Hayes Loper, Jonathan Miller, Tristain Haynes, and Tanner Moore each stole a base in game two.

The Bears (24-16, 8-8*conference) will play Mississippi Gulf Coast at home at Wednesday, April 8th in a doubleheader.
