Southwest Mississippi Softball hosted Pearl River on Thursday, April 9th in a doubleheader that saw the Lady Bears win game one 4-3 and lose game two 1-10.

Allie Ladnier pitched all 7.0 innings in the 4-3 game one win over Pearl River.

Ladnier had 2 strikeouts and only 3 runs allowed in the game.

Game one was a gritty back and forth battle between the Wildcats and the Lady Bears.

Pearl River got out to a quick 2-0 lead after two innings.

Southwest answered back with runs in the bottom of the third and fourth innings to tie the game 2-2.

An Alexis Dejean sacrifice fly scored the first run, and a Corin Talbot sacrifice fly scored the second.

Pearl River took back the lead in the top of the sixth with one run to go up 3-2 over Southwest.

But, the Lady Bears answered back with 2 runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead right back.

Jana Phillips opened up the hitting with a double to get the tying run into scoring position.

Daphe Rohrbacker laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Phillips to third.

Madalyn Ashford was hit by a pitch next to put the winning run on first with the tying run on third.

With a chance to tie it, Bailey McLin singled on a line drive that scored Phillips and tied the game 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth.

Next, Corin Talbot hit a shot to the wall to score McLin and take a 4-3 lead over Pearl River.

Now all the Lady Bears had to do was hold off the Wildcats in the top of the seventh.

A single and a pair of walks loaded the bases for Pearl River but left them with two outs in the process.

With the game on the line, the Wildcat at the plate hit a shot to centerfield with bases loaded but Madalyn Ashford made the catch to end the game and secure the 4-3 win over No. 3 Pearl River for Southwest.

Bailey McLin, Corin Talbot, Allie Ladnier, and Jana Phillips each had 2 hits in game one. Kate Clements and Madalyn Ashford both had 1.

Corin Talbot led the team with 2 RBIs while Bailey McLin and Alexis Dejean each had 1.

Jana Phillips and Madalyn Ashford both stole a base in game one.

Corin Talbot and Jana Phillips each had a double.

Game two was a more one-sided contest that saw Southwest fall 1-10 to Pearl River.

Mary Claire Salley started on the mound for the Lady Bears in game two.

Salley pitched 5.0 innings with 4 strikeouts and only 4 hits allowed to the No. 3 Wildcats.

Tye Boone pitched the final 2.0 innings of game two.

The lone Southwest run came on a Tristan Allen solo homerun that put Allen up to 18 homeruns on the year.

Bailey McLin led the team with 2 hits. Tristan Allen, Corin Talbot, and Madalyn Ashford each had 1.

"I think that all in all we played really good softball. Super proud of our kids and the way they played and the legacy they are leaving behind for the teams in the future," said Head Coach Shea Johnson, "when you beat a team like that, it helps us move one step closer to our goal of being a regional contender. It kind of sends a message to recruits that Southwest can knock off Itawamba, or Jones, or Pearl River. That's kind of the big three. The perennial powerhouses."

"Super proud of how we played and excited about getting some injured kids back," said Coach Johnson.

The Lady Bears (24-12, 11-9*conference) had the weekend off and will host East Central on Wednesday, April 15th.
