Southwest Softball ranked No. 19 after picking up win over Itawamba

Southwest Mississippi Softball hosted No. 13 ranked Itawamba Community College in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 28th with Southwest winning game one 12-6 and losing game two 3-8.

Coming off of her no hitter against Mississippi Delta, Allie Ladnier pitched all but the final out against Itawamba in game one.

Ladnier pitched 6.2 innings with 4 strikeouts and 5 runs allowed against the No. 13 ranked Indians.

Mary Claire Salley pitched 0.1 innings to get the final out of the game.

Itawamba came out hot with two homeruns in the first inning to go up 3-0 over Southwest.

Allie Ladnier answered back in the bottom of the first with a solo homerun to move the score to 3-1.

Corin Talbot would do the same with a solo homerun of her own in the bottom of the third inning to make the score 3-2.

Another 3 runs from Itawamba in the top of the fifth would give the Indians a 6-2 lead over the Lady Bears.

The Lady Bears responded in the bottom of the fifth with a huge 5 runs to regain the lead with a 7-6 score.

An Alexis Dejean single scored Bailey McLin and Corin Talbot.

Then, a Tristan Allen homer scored Alexis Dejean and Kate Clements to put Southwest up 7-6.

The Lady Bears kept Itawamba scoreless in the next inning followed by another 5 Southwest runs to give the Lady Bears a 12-6 lead.

Allie Ladnier homered again to score Madalyn Ashford and Corin Talbot and put the score at 10-6.

Shortly after, Tristan Allen also hit her second homerun of the game to score Alexis Dejean and move the score to the would be final of 12-6.

After holding off the Itawamba bats, the Lady Bears would win game one 12-6 over the No. 13 ranked team.

Corin Talbot, Alexis Dejean, and Tristan Allen each had 3 hits. Allie Ladnier had 2 hits while Kate Clements, Jana Phillips, and Madalyn Ashford each had 1.

Tristan Allen led the team with 5 RBIs with Allie Ladnier close behind her with 4 RBIs. Alexis Dejean had 2 and Corin Talbot had 1.

Allie Ladnier and Tristan Allen both had 2 homeruns in the game. Corin Talbot had 1 homerun of her own.

Tristan Allen and Corin Talbot each had a double as well.

With her 2 homeruns in game one, Tristan Allen reached 13 homeruns on the season to break the Southwest single season homerun record.

Game two was a close one for six innings but saw Southwest lose 8-3.

Ballard Kraft started on the mound for the Lady Bears in game two.

Kraft had 1 strikeout and 1 hit allowed in 3.0 innings pitched and picked up the loss for Southwest.

Mary Claire Salley came in for 1.2 innings and recorded 3 strikeouts of her own.

Corin Talbot also pitched 2.0 innings with 3 strikeouts while only allowing 2 hits.

Allie Ladnier came in to record the final out for Southwest in the top of the seventh.

All 3 of Southwest's runs came in the first inning when a Tristan Allen double scored Corin Talbot, Allie Ladnier, and Alexis Dejean.

Bailey McLin had 2 hits in game two. Allie Ladnier, Alexis Dejean, Kate Clements, Tristan Allen and Jana Phillips each had 1 hit.

Tristan Allen had 3 RBIs.

Tristan Allen and Jana Phillips both had a double.

"I thought Itawamba culminated a great week of softball for us. To come out 4-2 on the week playing two ranked teams, I thought the team played great all the way through," said Head Coach Shea Johnson, "I'm proud of the fight. When you're in this league and you're playing perennial power houses like we have. It's been a great week for Southwest softball. I'm super proud of my kids and coaches and the direction we've come."

After a 6-game week with 2 ranked wins, Southwest softball was ranked No. 19 on the NJCAA DII Softball Rankings.

The Lady Bears (22-6, 9-3*conference) take on Hinds at home on Tuesday, March 31st.
