Bear Baseball takes down Itawamba in extra innings

Southwest Mississippi Baseball traveled to Fulton on Saturday, March 28th to take on Itawamba in a doubleheader.

Southwest lost game one 4-3 and won game two 14-12.

Matt Newman started on the mound for the Bears in game one.

Newman pitched 6.2 innings with 7 strikeouts and only 3 runs allowed.

Camp Segrest pitched 0.2 innings with 1 run allowed and picked up the loss for the Bears

Nik Carney also pitched 0.2 innings with 1 strikeout.

Southwest scored 1 run in the top of the first on a JD Hidalgo solo homer.

The Bears found themselves down 3-1 going into the top of the eighth.

A Tanner Moore 2-run homerun tied the game 3-3 in the top of the eighth.

Itawamba would score 1 run in the bottom of the eighth and go on to win 4-3 over Southwest in game one.

JD Hidalgo led the team with 2 hits. Tanner Moore, Justin Domiano, Drew Swan, and Tristain Haynes each had 1 hit.

JD Hidalgo and Tanner Moore both had a homerun.

Justin Domiano had a double.

Drew Swan and Justin Domiano each stole a base.

Game two was a much higher scoring contest that saw Southwest win 14-12.

Alden Spencer started the game for the Bears, pitching 2.1 innings with 1 strikeout.

Dom Smith pitched 0.2 innings with 2 strikeouts.

Easton Boyte pitched 2.0 innings with 6 strikeouts.

Nathan Carter pitched 1.0 innings with 1 strikeout.

Nik Carney pitched 1.1 innings with 2 strikeouts.

Luke Simmons pitched 1.2 innings with 2 strikeouts and no runs allowed while picking up the win for Southwest.

The bats were hot for Southwest and the scoring started early.

A big 4-run second inning put the Bears up 5-1.

The first run of the game came on a Robbie Hokamp single that scored Justin Domiano.

A Tanner Moore triple cleared the bases in the second inning and put the Bears up 4-1 before a JD Hidalgo single scored Moore to push the lead to 5-1.

The next Southwest runs came in the fifth when Drew Swan scored during a pickoff attempt and another Tanner Moore triple scored Hayes Loper and Walker Wixon to make the score 8-5 in favor of the Bears.

A Jonathan Miller single scored Justin Domiano and gave the Bears a 9-6 lead.

Southwest still led 9-6 going into the bottom of the seventh when an Itawamba homerun tied the game 9-9.

The Bears got out of the inning and went into extras.

In the top of the eighth, Southwest put up 3 runs to go up 12-9.

A Tanner Moore single scored Jonathan Miller and Landon French. The other run came on Tristain Haynes scoring on a wild pitch.

Itawamba answered right back to tie the game once again and send it to the ninth inning.

The Bears went up 14-12 after a Sam Tumminello double scored Drew Swan and Hayes Loper.

Two Luke Simmons strikeouts in the bottom of the ninth would shut down Itawamba and secure the 14-12 win for Southwest.

Tanner Moore had an outstanding game with 4 hits and 6 RBIs including 2 triples and 2 stolen bases.

Jonathan Miller had 2 hits while JD Hidalgo, Justin Domiano, Robbie Hokamp, Walker Wixon, Landon French, Sam Tumminello, and Tristain Haynes each had 1.

Sam Tumminello had 2 RBIs. JD Hidalgo, Justin Domiano, Robbie Hokamp, and Jonathan Miller had 1 apiece.

Justin Domiano, Jonathan Miller, and Sam Tumminello each had a double.

Justin Domiano (x3), JD Hidalgo (x2), Jonathan Miller, and Tristain Haynes all stole bases in the contest.

"Saturday was a tough day, and I'm proud of the toughness shown by our guys. We had several things that went against us in game one, and we continued to play hard. When you're on the road against a good opponent, it gets tough. I'm glad we were willing to fight and bring back at least one win," said Head Coach Jack Edmonson.

The Bears (21-15, 5-7*conference) play Hinds on the road on Tuesday, March 31st.
