Bear Baseball sweeps on St. Patrick's Day

Southwest Mississippi Baseball hosted the Meridian Community College Eagles on Tuesday, March 17th in a doubleheader that saw the Bears win 13-6 and 4-3.

In game one, Talen Boyd started at pitcher for Southwest.

Boyd pitched 3.2 innings with 2 strikeouts.

Andrew Hoff came in after to pitch 1.2 innings with 1 strikeout and no runs allowed picking up the win for the Bears.

Dom Smith pitched the final 4.0 innings with 4 strikeouts of his own.

The Bear offense was on fire in a game with 13 runs and 11 hits.

After the top of the fourth, Southwest was down 4-2 with the 2 runs coming on a Justin Domiano single and a JD Hidalgo solo homerun.

The Bears responded with a huge 6 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Three batters hit by pitch loaded the bases for Southwest.

The first two runs scored on back to back bases loaded walks to Johnathan Miller and Tanner Moore to tie the game at 4-4.

Then, a JD Hidalgo double scored all three runners to put the Bears up 7-4 over the Eagles.

Drew Swan doubled to score Hidalgo and close out the scoring for the inning with an 8-4 Bear lead.

Next, Southwest had a 3 run sixth inning while holding Meridian scoreless for three straight innings.

Johnathan Miller kicked it off with a double to get into scoring position.

Tanner Moore tripled immediately after to score Miller and put Southwest up 9-4.

JD Hidalgo singled to score Moore and move the score to 10-4.

Hidalgo scored shortly after on a single by Justin Domiano to give the Bears an 11-4 lead.

The Bears would had 1 run in each of the next two innings to find themselves up 13-6 in the top of the ninth inning.

The runs came on a Tanner Moore single and a Sam Tumminello single.

Dom Smith would hold off the Eagles in the top of the ninth to finalize the Bears 13-6 win in game one.

JD Hidalgo had a huge day with 3 hits (HR, 2B), 5 RBIs, and 3 runs scored.

Tanner Moore and Justin Domiano each had 2 hits in game one. Drew Swan, Sam Tumminello, Landon French, and Johnathan Miller each had 1.

Tanner Moore added 3 RBIs, and Justin Domiano added 2. Drew Swan, Sam Tumminello, and Johnathan Miller each had 1 as well.

Tristain Haynes (x2), Tanner Moore (x2), Tee Robinson (x2), and Sam Tumminello all stole bases in the contest.

The 13-6 win snapped a four-game losing streak for Southwest.

In game two, Rhyson Carroway started on the mound for the Bears and pitched the entire game.

Carroway had 5 strikeouts and only 3 runs allowed in 7.0 innings pitched.

Game two was a defensive bout that saw Southwest take a 3-1 lead after two innings.

The three runs all came in the bottom of the second inning.

The first run scored on a bases loaded walk to Tristain Haynes.

Johnathan Miller doubled to score the next two runs and put the Bears up 3-1.

After five innings, Southwest led 4-2 with the other run coming on a Johnathan Miller single.

The game came down to the final out in the bottom of the seventh.

The Bears got the first two Eagle batters out then two quick singles put Meridian in position to tie the game.

The final batter came to the plate and hit a line drive to left field.

With two outs and a 2 run lead, the Bears just needed to prevent the tying run from scoring.

As the first run scored, Johnathan Miller fielded the ball in left field and hit his cut off man in Justin Domiano.

Domiano turned and threw a perfect ball to home plate where Sam Tumminello would catch it and tag out the tying run as he attempted to slide into home.

The Bears would win 4-3 and finish 2-0 on the night over the Eagles.

Johnathan Miller saved the day with 2 hits and 3 RBIs in the close game two.

Tanner Moore, Justin Domiano, and Drew Swan all had 1 hit each.

Tristain Haynes had 1 RBI.

Justin Domiano and Sam Tumminello each stole a base in game two.

The Bears (18-11, 2-4*conference) will host Holmes on Saturday, March 21st with a chance to even out their conference record.
