Bears lose to host Columbia State in OT

The 2026 portion of the basketball schedule started on a down note for the Bears as they fell to the host Columbia State Chargers, 81-77 in overtime, in day on of the Columbia State Classic Friday afternoon.

After falling behind early, a 14-4 run, highlighted by a Dawson Knox three-pointer, gave the Bears their first lead of the game, 16-13, with 14:05 left in the opening half.

The teams then proceeded to trade baskets, and the lead, for several minutes before a Leano Rolle layup gave the Bears a 32-24 advantage, their largest of the game, with 5:12 on the clock.

Columbia State would go on to score 16 of the final 24 points of the half to send the teams into the locker room at halftime tied at 40-40.

The back and forth continued in the second half before the Bears (5-9) went up 67-60 on Rolle's dunk with 5:22 left in regulation.

Columbia State would not give in, however, and came back to tie the game at 67-all with 3:34 on the clock. Cy Merrett then nailed a trey to put the Bears back on top 70-67 with 2:01 to go.

After Columbia State tied the game at 70-70 with 0:44 remaining, both teams had chances to take the lead, but were unsuccessful forcing the contest into extra play.

Columbia State too a 74-70 lead in overtime before baskets from Merrett and Jaylen Haliburton evened the score at 74-74 with 2:40 showing.

A layup and free throw would put Columbia State on top 77-74 with 1:12 on the clock and they would go on to claim the four-point win.

Haliburton would top the Bears' offense with 16 points. Rolle scored 15 points while Merrett and Courterius Scott both added 14.

The Bears were 8-13 at the free throw line.

The Bears will look to get back into the win column on January 3 when the close out the Classic with a 2:00 matchup against the Roane State Raiders.
