Bear Men’s Soccer shines in road win in Alabama

In arguably their most complete game of the regular season, thus far, the Bears got a hat trick from captain Cooper Powell in a 5-0 win against Calhoun in Birmingham, AL.

"We are pumped with the result but the biggest thing is how hard they worked for it," Southwest head coach Zach Mills said. "Their heart and hard work paid off and everything just clicked."

Just 4:00 into the match, the Bears (1-2) made the first statement as Max Ruelke found Powell on his first goal of the night putting the Bears up 1-0.

And just three minutes later, the score grew to 2-0 when Tyler Daramy found the back of the yet on another Ruelke assist.

The scores built momentum that Southwest used to its advantage.

In the 26th minute, Powell struck again with another goal, this one on an assist from Ilan Marin making the score 3-0.

The hits kept coming for Southwest as Marin scored a goal of his own on an assist from Jamie Settles in the 30th minute giving the Bears a 4-0 advantage.

Southwest capped-off the scoring in the 38th minute as Powell completed his hat trick with his third goal, this one on an assist from Orlando Hernandez.

In goal the combination of Cohen Bonner and Carson Lee combined for a clean sheet. The Bear defense was also key as Lee had 0 shots to defend and Bonner only three.

The Bears will stay in Birmingham and face Oxford of Emory Saturday at 1 p.m.
