Bears have strong performance in Game 1 win over Northwest

The Bears played a good brand of baseball in Sunday's Game 1 against Northwest Mississippi picking up a 7-1 victory over the Rangers. The momentum unfortunately was lost in Game 2 as Southwest fell 8-2. The series was moved to Holmes Community College in Goodman due to inclement weather that moved through Senatobia over the weekend.

"I thought that we played well most of the day, I thought that we played well offensively all day," Southwest head coach Jack Edmonson said. "The first game was just a good baseball game that we played. We took advantage of some mistakes and we got hits when we needed them (and) we pitched it really well."

In Game 1, the Bears (15-26, 6-8 MACCC) got a good pitching performance from starter Brodey Walker. The sophomore lefty showed grit early battling out of a bit of a jam in the first inning keeping the Rangers off of the board.

Southwest was the first to light up its side of the scoreboard. In the second inning the Bears got one run on a Davis Knight double to right, bringing in Cody Presley giving Southwest the early advantage.

In the fourth, the lead grew for the Bears as bases-loaded walks to Zayne Landry and Jake Meilstrup scored Trace Roy and Presley, respectively, making the score 3-0.

Knight contributed again in the sixth with a sacrifice fly to left allowing Presley to score his third run of the game and pushing the Southwest advantage to 4-0.

Another pair of runs in the seventh came courtesy of a Justin Domiano sacrifice fly, scoring Meilstrup followed by an RBI single from Roy which allowed Gage Hinnant to touch home.

Northwest pushed a run across in the eighth but it was answered back in the ninth as the Bears scored when Hinnant raced home on a passed ball, making the score the eventual final.

Hinnant led the Bears going 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Knight had a double and two RBIs.

Walker went 5.0 innings on the mound giving up only two hits, no runs and four walks while striking out two. Knight came on in relief, going the remaining 4.0 innings giving up only two hits, one run (earned) and three walks.

In Game 2, the Bears got off to a strong start plating two runs in the first when Meilstrup stole home followed by Roy singling to left, bringing Lane Steinwinder home.

In the second inning, however, Southwest lost the momentum as Northwest rallied to score four runs making it a 4-2 game.

The Bears threatened in the third, putting two runners on but they were unable to be brought home.

The Rangers added to their lead in the bottom half of the inning scoring an additional four runs making the score the eventual final.

Meilstrup led the Bears with two hits and a run scored.

Southwest has a quick turnaround and will be back in action Monday at 3 p.m. hosting Florida Post Grad a single game at 3 p.m. on Sophomore Day.
