Knowing that they had a tough task ahead of them, the Lady Bears put forth a strong effort on the road against No. 6 Jones. Despite this, Southwest was unable to top the Bobcats, losing a heart breaker 3-2 in Game 1 and a tough 5-0 loss in Game 2.
Even though they came up short, Southwest head coach Shea Johnson was pleased with how his Lady Bears played and competed against a highly-ranked opponent.
"A lot of maturity and a lot of great play," Johnson said. "We only had one error on the day. We played great defensively."
The Lady Bears (13-27, 7-15 MACCC) found themselves down 1-0 in the first and 2-0 in the third following a pair of RBI singles.
Southwest continued to fight and pulled even in the seventh in dramatic fashion. With Corin Talbot on base via a walk, Kate Clements stepped up and delivered with a two-run home run tying the game at 2. Abbey Pevey followed with a single — her second of the game — in an effort to keep the rally going and take the lead, but the next three batters were retired in order.
Jones unfortunately went on a run in the bottom of the seventh to score the game-winning run.
Clement led the offense with a home run, a run scored and two RBIs. Pevey recorded two hits.
Talbot went the distance in the circle for Southwest, striking out four.
In the nightcap, the Lady Bears tried to pull out a win to get the split but could not carry over the offense from the opener.
Skye Sharp pitched all six innings for Southwest giving up only four earned runs and one walk.
The Lady Bears return home Friday at 3 p.m. hosting Holmes in a conference doubleheader.
