Lady Bears put up fight, fall to No. 12 Northeast

Fueled by a sweep of Mississippi Delta earlier in the week, the Lady Bears entered the weekend hoping to keep the momentum against No. 12 Northeast. But the Tigers proved to be too much as Southwest fell 5-0 in Game 1 and 6-1 in Game 2.

"We didn't hit the ball well today," Southwest head coach Shea Johnson said. "We played pretty good defense and in general I thought that we played well against a really good team."

Game 1 starter Corin Talbot showed grit early on,battling back to retire three in a row after two Tiger runners got on base.

She did the same in the second, retiring three of the four batters she faced keeping Northeast off the scoreboard.

The Tigers unfortunately broke through in the third plating two runs on a home run to center putting the Lady Bears (8-16, 2-4 MACCC) down 2-0.

Southwest rallied in the fourth putting two runners on via a single by Liberty Gillihan and a walk to Allie Ladnier, but they were unable to be brought home.

The deficit grew to 4-0 in the fifth and 5-0 in the sixth as the Lady Bears were unable to answer.

Gillihan led Southwest with a hit.

In Game 2, the Lady Bears tried to get the offense going as Maggie Wilks and Gillihan led off the game with singles. But they were unable to cross home.

The Tigers pushed three across in the bottom half of the inning on home runs making it a 3-0 game.

The deficit grew to 6-0 in the second as Northeast kept the momentum on the home side.

Southwest scored in the sixth when Erin Acey sent a 0-1 pitch over the left field wall making it a 6-1 game. But the Lady Bears couldn't keep it going as Northeast claimed the win.

Acey led the Lady Bears with a home run, one run scored and one RBI.

Southwest returns home to host No. 7 Co-Lin on Wednesday at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
