The Bears knew that they had a tough task ahead of them Friday, hosting No. 9 Southeastern and despite the offense getting multiple big hits and swinging the bat hard, struggles elsewhere were tough to overcome as the Bears fell to the Blackhawks 7-4 in Game 1 and 7-2 in Game 2.
"We swung the bat today like we thought we were capable of swinging the bats," Southwest head coach Jack Edmonson said. "Not only did we hit balls hard but we hit balls that had chances of being extra base hits. I was really proud of that. We didn't pitch well enough to win today against a good team. We were in good position to win."
In Game 1, the Bears (6-11) got the bats going early. With Cam Bolden on base via an error, ensuing batter Lane Steinwinder brought him home after hitting a triple to deep right field, putting Southwest up 1-0.
The Bear offense added some insurance runs in the third. Cooper Lewis hit his second single of the day and touched home during the next at bat when Bolden doubled to left, making it a 2-0 game. Later in the inning Bolden and Steinwinder scored on an RBI single by Cody Presley increasing the Bear lead to 4-0.
Southwest unfortunately lost the momentum in the fourth as Southeastern cut into the lead with a 3-run inning.
The Blackhawks drew even in the eighth before adding three more in the ninth. The Bears tried to rally in the end but were unable to do so.
Lewis led the Bears with three hits and a run scored. Steinwinder had two hits, a run scored and an RBI while Presley had two RBIs.
In the nightcap, the Bears once again made the first move. In the bottom of the second with Justin Domiano on base after being hit by a pitch, he was joined by Tanner Moore and Zayne Landry who each singled. Lewis stepped up and continued his big day picking up where he left off in the first game with yet another single, this time scoring Domiano and giving Southwest a 1-0 lead.
Next up was Bolden who hit into a fielder's choice which allowed Moore to score increasing the Southwest lead to 2-0.
In the third, however, the Bears had difficulty slowing down the stellar Blackhawk offense who rallied for five runs in the inning.
Down but not out, the Bears tried to answer and got a runner on base via a Trace Roy single, but he was unable to touch home.
In the fourth, Southeastern added to its lead with a solo home run making it a 6-2 game. The Blackhawks added their final run in the sixth making the score the eventual final.
Landry led the Bears with two hits.
Southwest will be back in action on Sunday against No. 22 Lansing at 12 p.m. and No. 5 Pearl River at 5 p.m.
