Dawson Richard had arguably his best performance as a Bear Friday helping the Southwest close the day on a high note with a 3-0 shutout win over Wallace State in the nightcap of a pair of contests. In Game 1, the Bears unfortunately fell 2-0 to Kirkwood. Both games were played at East Central in Decatur.
"We played really, really good baseball all day today," Southwest head coach Jack Edmonson said. "We gave up two runs in the first inning (of Game 1) and then we went the next 13 innings without giving up a run."
In Game 2, Richard, went all seven innings for the Bears (5-8) giving up only two hits, and two walks while striking out 11. His 11 Ks was fourth most by a Bear in a single game.
Richard struck out three of the first five batters he faced as he set the tone early.
He got help from his offense in the second inning. Cody Presley led off with a double and later touched home on a single from Landry putting Southwest up 1-0.
The Bears scored their second run in the fourth on a Carther Hathcock sacrifice fly to center scoring Cooper Lewis.
The third run came in the sixth when Jonathon Miller singled in Landry making the score the eventual final.
Richard shut the door on the Lions in the seventh retiring three of four batters, striking out two in the process.
Miller and Landry led the Bears with two hits and an RBI apiece with the latter also adding a run scored.
In Game 1, the two Kirkwood runs came in the first inning on a two-out triple to right putting the Bears (5-8) in an early hole.
Southwest scattered a few hits over the next few innings but could not get the runners home to respond.
Cameron Bolden, Lane Steinwinder, Gage Hinnant and Zayne Landry all had hits for the Bears.
The Bears return to action on Wednesday in Wesson facing Hinds at 3 p.m. and Co-Lin at 6 p.m.
