Short-handed Lady Bears get road win at Delgado

Playing shorthanded proved to be no problem for the Lady Bears Monday night as they traveled to New Orleans and came home with a much-needed 67-58 victory. Four members of the squad missed the trip due to having the flu.

Six ties and eight lead changes were the name of the game in the first half. The Lady Bears (3-7) held a 14-12 lead after the first quarter while Delgado won the second quarter by the same score to send the teams into intermission knotted at 26-26.

After Delgado took a 28-26 lead to open the third quarter, the Lady Bears began firing on all cylinders. A Mercedes Dorsey bucket with 9:25 on the clock a Gracie Miller layup served as bookends to a 23-6 run to put the Lady Bears on top 49-32 after three quarters of play.

The teams traded baskets for much of the fourth quarter before a pair of Miller free throws gave the Lady Bears a seemingly unsurmountable 65-46 advantage for just 2:35 left to play.

The hosts would not quietly, however, going on a 12-2 run the remainder of the quarter. That would be too little, too late, though as the Lady Bears returned home with the win.

"I was super proud of our focus and togetherness tonight," said Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris. "Gracie and Mady (Smith) scored well, Mercedes had a great night on the boards (she ended the game with 23 rebounds) and our bench was a spark. (The win gave us) much needed positivity going into the (Christmas) break."

Smith led the Lady Bears' offense with 24 points while Miller netted 19 points. Dorsey recorded a double-double by scoring 13 points to go along with her 23 boards.

The Lady Bears now take time to enjoy the Christmas break before returning to action, at home, on January 6 by hosting Delgado. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30
