Bears battle back, finish in tie with Meridian

The Bears showed great resilience Tuesday night at home against Meridian, battling back to score the equalizing goal late before their match ended in a 2-2 tie.

"We turned off two times in this game and they (Meridian) capitalized on both," Southwest head coach Zach Mills said. "Kudos to Meridian for making sure that they finish their chances, but I was super sad that we could not win this game. I am proud of the guys for being resilient, coming back and tying it."

It didn't take long for the Bears (4-4-1, 0-2-1 MACCC) to make the first move as Joel Bastida found Justin Ruiz on a key pass before the latter found the back of the net giving Southwest a 1-0 advantage.

As the first half wound down, however, the Bears struggled a bit. The Eagles scored two goals over an eight-minute span to not only climb back in the contest but take the lead.

Despite being down, the Bears were not out. They continued to battle and their hard work paid off in the 54th minute when the Bastida to Ruiz connection worked its magic once again resulting in another score for Southwest who pulled even at 2-2.

In one last effort to try and get the go-ahead and potential game-winning goal, the Bears used the momentum from their latest score but were unable to get the ball in the net once more as the match ended in a tie.

Southwest will be back in action on Friday as it hosts Holmes at 7 p.m.
