Bears shut down Oxford of Emory

Just two days removed from a shutout win, a combination of a smothering defense and a pristine offense was put on display by the Bears once again as they matched their score from the other day, picking up a 4-0 victory Monday over Oxford of Emory. The game took place in Birmingham, Alabama.

"Oxford of Emory is always a good team," Southwest head coach Zach Mills said. "Thankfully we showed up and were hungry for (the win).

The Bears (3-1) got things going in the 16th minute when Sergio Padin got a pass from Justin Ruiz before sending the ball in the back of the net, putting Southwest up 1-0.

Meanwhile, the Bear defense and goalkeeper John Sones proved to be too much for the Eagle offense to handle.

With less than 3:00 to go in the half, Southwest added to its lead. Jack Boyd hooked up with Brayden Green who scored, making it a 2-0 game.

Around the 52:00 mark, the lead for the Bears grew to 3-0 following a goal from Raul Alegre. He then followed that up 10:00 later with an assist on a goal by Boyd, making the score the eventual final.

Sones had three saves on the afternoon.

Mills adds that he has been impressed with the play of his not only his goalkeeper, but also his defense as a whole, thus far this year. Through the first four matches, the Bears have given up only two goals while Sones has recorded 16 saves.
