The Bears entered Tuesday's doubleheader at home against Hinds hoping to build off of momentum from Saturday's Game 2 win over Holmes. And even though the Bears played a good brand of baseball, the Eagles proved to be a bit too much as Southwest lost 10-5 in Game 1 and 4-2 in Game 2.
"I thought that our guys played hard, and I don't really have any complaints about them," Southwest head coach Jack Edmonson said. "I am proud of who we have in our program and what they put forth every day. Baseball is tough and so is life and today is one of those days. We are going to try and take the good from it, move forward and keep doing what we plan on doing every day."
In Game 1, the Bears (19-28, 7-13) got off to a good start plating the game's first run in the second inning as Nolan Walther led off with a single and advanced to third on an error before Lane Steinwinder brought him home on a fielder's choice putting Southwest up 1-0.
The Bears held on to that lead until the fifth inning when the Eagles jumped ahead 3-1 following a three-run home run. But the Bears fought right back and responded in the bottom half of the inning with a two run single by Gage Hinnant bringing Jake Meilstrup and Reed Duthu home and tying the game at 3.
The momentum unfortunately did not last long as Hinds rallied in the sixth with two additional runs to take a 5-3 advantage. Another rally in the seventh put Southwest in a deeper hole as the hosts trailed 8-3. The Eagles added one more in the eighth and ninth innings making it a 10-3 game. Southwest scratched two runs across in the ninth as Hinnant singled in Trace Roy before Cody Presley hit into a fielder's choice. But they could not keep it going as Hinds got the last out during the ensuing at bat.
Hinnant led the Bears with two hits and three RBIs.
In Game 2, Southwest found itself down 3-0 in the second inning as Hinds struck first. But the Bears did not panic, pressed on and quickly reduced the visitors' lead. Colson Thompson stole home putting Southwest on the board before a throwing error during the ensuing at bat allowed Walther to touch home pulling the Bears within one at 3-2. Unfortunately for the Bears, they could not keep the run going.
Both teams continued to battle over the next few innings as the pitching and defense shined, preventing the opponents from getting anything going offensively.
Despite putting runners on base in the fifth and sixth innings, the Bears could not get them home. The Eagles added to their lead in the seventh scoring one run to increase the deficit for Southwest to 4-2. The Bears threatened with two runners on in the bottom of the seventh but could not score, sealing the win for the Eagles.
Thompson led the Bears with two hits and one run scored.
The Bears will be back in action on Saturday hosting East Mississippi at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.
