Playing in their first series in a little under two weeks, the Lady Bears were hoping to get back in the swing of things and end Wednesday on a positive note at home against No. 6 Jones. But the Bobcats proved to be a bit too much as Southwest fell 3-1 in Game 1 and 11-0 in Game 2.
"I saw some good things today, especially in the first game. In the second game, we didn't swing the bat really well," Southwest head coach Shea Johnson said.
In Game 1, starter Lauren Mounce and the Lady Bears (12-14, 1-9 MACCC) held the Bobcats in check through the first two innings of play, but the offense couldn't get a run home despite putting two runners on in each inning.
Jones broke the scoreless streak in the third with a solo home run. Southwest looked to answer but struggles at the plate hurt the hosts as they were shut down over the next two innings.
In the fifth, however, the Lady Bears pulled even. With one out, Londyn Robertson walked and later scored when Presley Dease singled.
The swing in momentum was unfortunately short-lived as Jones answered with two more runs in the sixth making the score the eventual final.
In Game 2, the Bobcats jumped ahead first, taking advantage of a passed ball to plate the game's first run and put Southwest down 1-0.
A three-run home run followed by a costly error, plated additional runs in the third for the visitors as the Lady Bears fell into a 5-0 hole.
Despite the deficit, Southwest pressed on trying to get back into the ball game, but they were unable to find a rhythm offensively. Jones added six more runs in the seventh inning before handing Southwest the Game 2 loss.
The Lady Bears will be back home for their next contest as the Holmes Lady Bulldogs come to town Saturday for a double-header. Game 1 is set for 1 p.m.
