Bears split with No. 7 Jones

The Bears got off to a strong start in Wednesday's road double-header against No. 7 Jones winning Game 1 9-8 but they unfortunately could not keep the momentum going into Game 2, falling 21-1.

"In Game 1, we got down early but we continued to battle," Southwest head coach Jack Edmonson said. "We had some people step up and make some huge plays. We lost momentum in Game 2."

In Game 1, the Bears (18-25, 6-10 MACCC) got a huge performance from Colson Thompson as the sophomore launched two home runs including a grand slam finishing with three total hits, two runs scored and six RBIs. Cody Presley also shined with his third home run of the season in addition to two runs scored and three RBIs.

Southwest jumped ahead first in the opening frame when Marcus Jackson touched home on a Thompson fielder's choice giving the Bears the early advantage.

The Bears unfortunately lost the momentum in the bottom half of the inning when the Bobcats pulled even. Jones added five more runs in the second putting Southwest in a hole, down 6-1.

The visitors continued to fight and inched closer the following inning when Thompson hit the first of his two long balls sending a solo shot over the left field wall making it a 6-2 game.

Jones once again made it a five-run deficit for Southwest in the fifth plating one run. But the Bears rallied in the seventh with three runs all on Presley's home run to left scoring Davis Knight and Jackson. Presley's home run made it a 7-5 game in favor of the hosts.

The Bobcats added one run in the eighth to put the Bears down three but they jumped ahead in the ninth as Jackson, Cru Bella and Presley all scored on Thompson's grand slam to left giving Southwest its first lead since the first inning at 9-8.

Myles Green came on and closed the door on the Bobcats in the bottom of the ninth, preserving the win for Southwest.

In Game 2, the Bears fell behind 1-0 in the first as the Bobcats got a solo home run. Unfortunately Southwest wasn't able to answer and it hurt in the third when Jones rallied and plated six additional runs putting the visitors down 7-0.

The Bears pushed a run across in the third when Bella hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Thompson and making it a 7-1 game.

But the Bobcats responded with three runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and 10 in the sixth before taking the win.

Nolan Walther led the Bears with two hits.

Southwest will be back in action on Saturday as the Bears will travel north to Goodman to face Holmes at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.
