The Lady Bears hoped to kick the beginning of the final weekend of the season off on the right note Friday against Itawamba but struggles in the field and at the plate hurt Southwest as the Lady Bears dropped Game 1, 7-6 and Game 2, 16-2.
"We have to right the ship and we have to get it in the right direction," said Southwest head coach Shea Johnson who touched on struggles hitting, fielding and pitching.
In Game 1, the Lady Bears (17-25, 6-20 MACCC) got off to a positive start as a Presley Dease single in the first scoring Anlyssa Richardson, giving Southwest an early advantage.
Lady Bear starter Abbey Pevey followed suit retiring the side keeping the momentum with Southwest.
The Lady Bears kept it going in the third, plating three more runs, two on a Dease double bringing Richardson and Maggie Wilks home and another when Erin Acey singled to left allowing MaryClaire Johnson to touch home.
But the Lady Indians answered right back plating six runs to take the lead.
Southwest responded in the fourth, tying the game at 6 with back-to-back RBI singles with the first coming from Dease and the second from Anne Claire Sistrunk.
Itawamba scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth and the Lady Bears could not respond in the seventh.
Dease led the Lady Bears with three hits and four RBIs.
In Game 2, Southwest fell in a hole early on as Itawamba rallied to score six runs in the first.
The Lady Bears cut into that lead in the third when Pevey doubled to right scoring Wilks and Richardson and making it a 6-2 game.
Unfortunately, that was the closest Southwest would get for the remainder of the contest as Itawamba plated eight runs in the third and two in the fourth before handing the Lady Bears the loss.
Pevey led Southwest with a double and two RBIs.
Southwest wraps the season Sunday at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. hosting Meridian on Sophomore Day.
