The short-handed Lady Bears entered Wednesday's doubleheader at No. 2 Co-Lin knowing that they had their work cut out for them due to multiple injuries. And despite putting up a fight against the Lady Wolves, they could not pull through, falling 8-2 in Game 1 and 19-0 in Game 2.
"We just ran out of gas. They are a good hitting team," Southwest head coach Shea Johnson said. "That has kind of been our story. We are playing kids out of position. It has been a tough road."
The Lady Bears (14-20, 3-15 MACCC) had trouble finding their footing early on. Struggles offensively helped the Lady Wolves build momentum as they plated two runs in the first inning and one additional in the second putting Southwest down 3-0.
Southwest pushed a run across in the fifth when Erin Acey launched her first home run of the season over the left field wall making it a 3-1 game.
It was unfortunately answered in the bottom half of the inning by a five-run effort from Co-Lin increasing the Southwest deficit to seven at 8-1.
Acey shined once again during her next at bat as an RBI single in the seventh scored Maggie Wilks pulling the Lady Bears within six at 8-2. Even though Alyssa Leggett followed with a single of her own during the ensuing at bat, the Lady Bears ran out of steam as the Lady Wolves sealed the win.
Acey led Southwest going 2-for-3 with a home run, a run scored and two RBIs.
In Game 2, the lack of depth in certain positions played a big factor as the Lady Bears struggled to keep up.
Co-Lin plated four runs in the first inning, five in the second, six in the third and four in the fourth before sealing the win the following inning.
Wilks and Morgan Gras led the way for the Lady Bears with a hit apiece.
Southwest will be back in action on Friday facing Coahoma at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
