Through the first few innings of Mondays home game against Rend Lake, the Bears struggled a bit to keep up with a good Warrior team. Then came the 7
th inning where Southwest put up eight runs, erasing a four-run deficit to take the lead before holding off the visitors to claim an 11-7 win.
For the Bears (7-4) Monday's game was the chance for some pitchers to show out. For starter Tate Cuevas, it was only his second appearance of the year and first start. And for the next two in redshirt sophomore J.P. Lyon and redshirt freshman Kaiden Rosetti, it was their first appearances on the mound in several months. Rosetti earned the win and it was special for him as it was his first time pitching on the collegiate level.
"I was glad to be out there, coming off of an injury. I was glad about the outcome," said Rosetti who battled shoulder injuries. "I'm glad to be back out there and throwing again."
Cuevas struck out two over 2.0 innings of work while Lyon had a team-high five strikeouts over 3.0 innings and Rosetti two over 2.0 innings.
Early on, it was the Warriors who struck first as a three-run second inning put the Bears in the hole. Rend Lake added one more in the third, but Southwest put together a rally of its own in the bottom half of the inning.
After Reed Duthu was hit by a pitch and both Marcus Jackson and Gage Hinnant walked, Trace Roy stepped up and brought two runners home on a single to right. The hit was the first of four on the day for Roy pushing his total to eight over the past three games.
"I've made some adjustments at the plate as far as my stance, and with my swing in general," Roy said. "I think that has benefitted me a lot and I'm seeing the ball better right now."
Later in the inning the Bears pulled within one at 4-3 when Hinnant scored on a wild pitch.
Unfortunately, Rend Lake added to its lead with a run each in the third, fifth and seventh innings. But in the bottom of the seventh, Southwest mounted its big comeback.
With Jackson, Hinnant and Roy on base via a walk, a hit batter and a single, respectively, Colson Thompson drew a bases-loaded walk to bring a run home. Next up was Nolan Walther who hit a single in to left scoring Hinnant and making it a 7-5 game.
Two batters later the Bears took their first lead of the game at 8-7 on a bases-clearing RBI double to left by pinch-hitter Cody Presley, who advanced to third on the throw home.
"I had to stay with the approach and get at least one run across so we can get something going," he said.
Two batters later, Presley stole home before Duthu singled to left allowing Gavin Bledsoe to score. Jackson followed suit with an RBI single during the ensuing at bat making the score the eventual final.
Davis Knight came on in relief of Rosetti, keeping the Warriors at bay over the final two innings to preserve the win. He struck out three in 2.0 innings.
Roy led the charge offensively going 4-for-5 with one run scored and two RBIs. Duthu, Jackson and Hinnant each had two runs scored.
The Bears have a quick turnaround as they travel to Perkinston on Tuesday to face Mississippi Gulf Coast and East Mississippi at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., respectively.
