Hoping to play spoiler to East Central, who was aiming for the top seed in the MACCC South, the Bears welcomed in the Warriors Thursday for the season finale. And despite getting off to a strong start, mistakes and miscues hurt the Bears as they fell 49-13.
"Just too many miscues early on, it has kind of been our season," Southwest head coach Cliff Collins said. "East Central is a good football team that doesn't turn the football over, they don't give up big plays. We did that early on and it cost us."
The miscues for Southwest (1-8, 1-5 MACCC South), came following the Bears' first drive which was very efficient as they drove 70 yards in nine plays and scored when Quez Goss hooked up with Marcellus Jackson on a 42-yard touchdown pass. Lyndell Boatman added the point after to give Southwest a 7-0 lead.
After the Bears got the ball back following an East Central punt, the momentum didn't last long as a fumble gave the ball right back to the Warriors who capitalized on the good field position. They punched it in on the ensuing drive's fourth play on a 17-yard rushing score tying the game at 7 about halfway through the first quarter.
Later in the quarter, the Warriors scored a second touchdown this time through the air putting Southwest down 14-7.
After the Bears were unable to answer, the Warriors added to their lead once gain on the third play of the second quarter following a 10-yard touchdown run.
East Central tried to add to its 21-7 lead with a 36-yard field goal but it was blocked by Jeffery Anderson Jr., keeping the Bears within striking distance.
And as the Bears tried to inch closer, a costly strip sack was scooped up and returned 40 yards for a touchdown making it a 28-7 deficit for the Bears with 7:48 to go until halftime.
Early in the third quarter the Bear defense showed great resiliency, stopping three-consecutive rushing tries by the Warrior offense from a yard out, however, they it could not on the fourth as East Central added to its lead putting the Bears down 35-7.
The Bears were unable to get the Warriors out of their rhythm as they added to the lead on another short rushing touchdown on their next offensive drive making the score 42-7.
Despite this, the Bears kept fighting and moved closer on the ensuing drive. Jordan Mills, who took over at quarterback earlier, led a 13-play, 75-yard drive which wrapped with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Jackson, his second score of the night. The two-point try was unsuccessful making the score 42-13.
East Central scored its final touchdown in the fourth quarter on an 18-yard pick-six making the score the eventual final.
Jackson led the Bears with 10 catches for 99 yards and two touchdowns. Goss finished 13-of-16 for 163 yards and one touchdown. Defensively Danarius Hilliard finished with 13 tackles including one for a loss. Jeffery Polk Jr. had nine tackles, one fumble recovery and one pass breakup.
