Winners of three-consecutive games, the Bears entered Wednesday's contests at Hinds hoping to keep the momentum going.
And they did just that getting a 12-2 win in Game 1 and a 16-8 win in Game 2, marking their second-straight sweep and third this season.
"I thought that we played really well, again, in all facets of the game," Southwest head coach Jack Edmonson said. "Our team is having fun and everyone is playing well. This is why them came to Southwest to experience what we are doing right now."
Myles Green — who normally comes from the bullpen — got the start in Game 1 for the Bears (19-22, 9-11 MACCC) and had a strong showing. The Forrest County AHS alum gave up only two hits, two runs (one earned), and five walks while striking out six over 6.0 innings of work. He was relieved by Collin Netto who pitched the remaining two innings, giving up only one hit.
"We knew that he was capable of that and earlier in the year, he was so good in the bullpen, that it was hard to take him out," Edmonson said of Green. "I didn't know that he would throw six innings but I knew that he was going to throw strikes."
The Southwest offense followed suit as four different Bears had multiple hits including Jerod Williams who led the way with three — one of which being a home run. Colson Thompson, Christian Kell and Hunter Harell all had two hits.
The visitors plated the first run in the second when Tyler Otts hit into a fielder's choice allowing Connor McHenry to score, putting the Bears up 1-0. Unfortunately, the Eagles pushed a run across in their half of the second on a bases-loaded walk.
In the fourth, Southwest rallied. With two outs and Thompson at second, Otts brought him home on a single to right. Later in the inning Harrell and Braiden Jones each had RBI singles scoring Otts and Marcus Jackson, respectively. Two batters later, Harrell raced home on a passed ball before Williams singled in McHenry pushing the Bear lead to 7-1.
Green recorded his second-consecutive 1-2-3 inning in the fourth preventing Hinds from getting anything going offensively.
The Bears pushed three more runs across home plate in the sixth on a McHenry sacrifice fly followed by a two-run homer from Williams, increasing the Southwest lead to 10-1.
After the Eagles scored their second and final run in the sixth on an error, the Bears plated one run in each of the seventh and eighth innings, rounding out the scoring in the contest.
In Game 2, it was the Eagles who struck first in the first inning on an RBI single.
The one-run deficit for the Bears did not last long as Kell singled in Williams, tying the game at 1.
Southwest starter Brycen Smith ran into a bit of trouble in the second but battled out of it despite Hinds putting two on via a double and a single.
His offense provided additional help in the third. RBI singles from Jones, McHenry and Kell were accompanied by an RBI double from Williams increasing the Bear lead to 6-1.
The Eagles scored again in the third, opening the inning with back-to-back doubles, the latter of which plated one run making it a 6-2 game. They inched even closer in the fourth pulling within one at 6-5.
Two innings later, the Bears pulled away once again. McHenry and Harrell recorded RBI singles with the latter's plating two runs making it a four-run lead for Southwest. The Bears added one more later in the inning when Kell walked with the bases loaded pushing the visitors' lead to 10-5.
After the Eagles scored two in the sixth, the Bears created more distance in the seventh. Jones launched a grand slam over the left-center field wall before Southwest took advantage of a couple of Hinds mistakes scoring two runs on a passed ball and a throwing error making the score 16-7.
Hinds plated one more run in the bottom of the seventh before Jones — who came on in relief in the sixth — shut the door on the Eagles, sealing the win.
Williams once again led the offense, recording three hits, three runs scored and an RBI. Also tallying three hits was McHenry who added two runs and two RBIs. Jones had two hits, three runs and five RBIs, Kell two hits and four RBIs and Harrell two hits, two runs and two RBIs.
Just two days after setting a new school record by reaching base safely in 21-straight games, Jackson reached safely in both games, pushing his record to 23.
The Bears will be on the road once again for their next series. They travel to Scooba Saturday to face East Mississippi at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.
