Lady Bears fall to visiting Itawamba

Returning home following a tough outing at Meridian on Wednesday, the Lady Bears were hoping to turn things around Saturday against the No. 17 Itawamba Lady Indians. However, struggles at the plate and in the field hurt Southwest as the Lady Bears fell 5-1 in Game 1 and 10-0 in Game 2.

"I thought that we threw it well and hit it well in the first game but in the second game, they scored seven runs off of errors," Southwest head coach Shea Johnson said. "We're not scoring runs and we are not playing good defense."

Mia Pumila got the start in Game 1 for the Lady Bears (12-20, 2-12 MACCC) and had to battle out of a jam in the first inning as the Lady Indians put two runners on via singles. Despite this Pumila regrouped and got the next two batters with no damage done.

Southwest also threatened in its half of the first as Lilli Robertson got into scoring position following a leadoff double. However, she was stranded as the next three batters were retired in order.

The scoreless streak was eventually broken by Itawamba in the third as a triple and an error resulted in three runs putting Southwest down 3-0.

The Lady Bears continued to battle but could not push any more runs across over the next three innings.

Southwest scored in the sixth as Robertson touched home after Kacey Stampley grounded out making it a 3-1 game.

But the Lady Indians answered right back the following inning with two more runs on an error and a sacrifice fly, rounding out the scoring in the contest.

Pumila went the distance giving up only two earned runs and no walks while striking out three. Robertson led the Southwest bats with two hits and a run scored.

In Game 2, Itawamba scored first in the second inning, taking advantage of a Southwest mistake to push two across the plate and put the hosts down 2-0.

The Lady Bears fell in a deeper hole in the third as the Lady Indians rallied, plating seven additional runs, five of which came on RBI singles. Itawamba added one more run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly making it a 10-0 game.

Southwest attempted to rally late as Robertson got on base via a single but the following batter was retired ending the contest.

On the mound, the combination of starter Lana Dalton and Emme Wallace gave up only two walks while striking out four.

Offensively, Robertson, Morgan Gras and Kayci Beth Wallace all registered hits for the Lady Bears.

Southwest returns to action on Tuesday in a road contest against No. 10 Jones. Game 1 is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
