Saturday's home loss vs Hinds was a heartbreaker for the Bears. But after hard practices and some adjustments, they got back to playing a better brand of soccer Friday picking up a 2-1 win at East Mississippi.
"I'm glad that we got the win. I'm very thankful for the result but we need to get better," Southwest head coach Zach Mills said.
The Bears (7-2-4, 4-2-2 MACCC) got things rolling early on with a tough defense coupled with a pair of goals from Justin Ruiz. The first of which came just 2:50 in as he got an assist from Rory Humphrey before finding the back of the net.
About 10:00 later, Ruiz helped the Bears add to the lead with his second goal, this time on a pass from Henzer Flores.
The Lions got their goal on a penalty kick in the 86
th minute but the Bear defense prevented any further scoring, preserving the win.
The Bears are back in action on Tuesday at 7 p.m. with a road match at Meridian.
