Nearly nearly two decades ago, Glover Quin made a name for himself as a member of the Southwest football team before eventually finding success in the pros, putting together a 10 year career in the NFL.
Fast forward to present day and the former Houston Texan and Detroit Lion defensive back wanted to give back to the program that helped shape him. Before Thursday's practice, where the Bears broke in the brand-new turf field at John I. Hurst Stadium, Quin met with the team and provided tips on how to succeed.
"I was blessed with a gift to play and understand the game so being able to talk to the young guys and help them be able to reach their full potential, whatever it is, is something I enjoy doing," Quin said.
While talking to the players, Quin said that he got his start at nearby North Pike High School and despite suffering an injury during his freshman season at Southwest (pointing to the exact spot on the field where he got hurt), he bounced back and fought on. But he also relayed to the team that in addition to getting over his injury it was all about taking advantage of opportunities. He made it a point of telling the team that he hit the books hard in the classroom, was very coachable, was very respectable and did not take anything for granted.
After talking to the team, Quin stayed and observed the entire practice, often congratulating and complimenting players after making plays and chatting with coaches.
Afterwards, Quin said he was impressed with the product on the field.
"It looked good," he said. "Knowing what you have to do, playing at a high level, playing with high intensity, making plays, that is the name of the game. You have guys that can get the job done and they get the job done. It should be a good year."
