Bears split with Northwest to close out Sophomore Day 2021 season

Games marked head coach Ken Jackson's last before retirement

The Bears closed out their season Sunday, and completed Sophomore Day, with a split with visiting Northwest Mississippi as they took game one 10-0 (in five innings) before falling 5-2 in the finale in MACCC action. 
 
The doubleheader also marked Ken Jackson's final games as head coach of the Bears as he recently announced his retirement from coaching.
 
The Bears took a 2-0 1st-inning lead in game one. Jerod Williams led off with a walk and scored four batters later when Dillon Morgan reached on a fielder's choice. Jonathan Havard followed Morgan with a single that scored Braydon Coffey, on base with a double. Coffey later added another double.
 
In the Bears' 2nd, Williams' sacrifice fly scored Mason Barker, on base with a double, to make the score 3-0.
 
Barker's two-out grand slam in the bottom of the 3rd increased the Bears' lead to 7-0.
 
In the bottom of the 5th when Havard reached with a lead-off double and scored three batters later on a fielder's choice. Williams then ended then ended the game with a two-RBI base hit.
 
Braxton Cooksey picked up the win on the mound, giving up 4 hits on a walk in 5 innings. He struck out 3 batters.
 
Ilich Purcell had a pair of hits for the Bears.
 
Northwest (24-16, 16-12) scored what proved to be all the runs they would need in game two with 3 in the top of the 1st.
 
The Bears answered in bottom of the 1st when Williams reached base with a lead-off walk and scored later on a passed ball to make the score 3-1.
 
Lake Carmichael started the Bears' 2nd inning with a walk and scored later on Williams' sacrifice fly to pull the Bears to within 3-2.
 
The score would stay the same until the top of the 7th when Northwest scored the final runs of the game.
 
Jacob McDaniel took the loss on the mound, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits and a pair of walks in 4 innings. He struck out 6 batters.
 
Cooksey and Williams both had a single for the Bears.
