Gregory's homer helps Bears win game two 1-0, gain split with Holmes

Gage Gregory provided the only run the Bears would need in game two with a one-out, 4th-inning homer to right field while the pitching of Braxton Cooksey and Jacob McDaniel did the rest as the Bears defeated visiting Holmes 1-0 and gain a split in their MACCC doubleheader.
 
Holmes won the opener in a slugfest, 10-9.
 
Gregory's blast was one of only three for the Bears in the game. Braydon Coffey had a double while Austin Willis singled.
 
Cooksey picked up the win on the mound after striking out 12 batters while walking three and surrendering six hits in six innings. McDaniel retired three of the four batters he faced in one inning, one with a strikeout, to record the save.
 
The Bears trailed 3-0 after 2 ½ innings of game one. A two RBI single by Gregory, who later scored on a passed ball, and run-scoring base hit from Presley Hall then put the Bears on top 4-3 after three innings.
 
After Holmes tied the game in the top of the 4th, the Bears went on top 5-4 in the bottom of the frame on a Mason Barker RBI double, the second of his three hits in the game.
 
Brady Tynes drove in two runs with a triple in the Bears' 5th and later scored on a sacrifice fly to make the score 8-4.
 
Holmes scored a four runs in the top of the 6th to tie the game at 8-8. The Bears answered in the bottom of the inning when Gregory, on base with a double, scored on Hall's two-bagger to put the Bears (5-13, 4-6) back on top 9-8.
 
Holmes (4-14, 2-10) tallied two runs in the top of the 8th and held the Bears' at bay in their final two at bats to escape with the win.
 
Ilich Purcell allowed two runs on six hits in 3.1 innings to take the loss. He struck out five batters.
 
Jerod Williams had two singles for the Bears.

The Bears return to play on March 24 at home with a scheduled conference doubleheader against 10th-ranked Meridian. The first pitch of game one is scheduled for 3:00.
