Bears drop Opening-Day twinbill

Opening Day of the 2021 baseball season did not turn out as hoped for the Bears as a late comeback attempt fell just short in a 10-9 opening-game loss; they fell 5-1 in the nightcap.
 
The Bears trailed 3-0 in the opener before getting on the board in their half of the 3rd inning. Brady Tynes led off the frame with a double to right field and scored three batters later on a Gage Gregory base hit. Later, Jerod Williams, on base via a walk, scored on a wild pitch to cut the Bears' deficit to 3-2.
 
Trailing 10-2 in the 6th, the Bears trimmed the visitors' lead to 10-7 on bases-loaded walks to Braydon Coffey and Tynes, a Braxton Cooksey two-RBI double and William's sacrifice fly.
 
The comeback attempt continued in the bottom of the 7th as the Bears picked up a pair of runs on RBI singles from Cooksey and Williams. Unfortunately, the tying and winning runs were left on base as the visitors prevailed.
 
Josh Bailey took the loss on the mound, giving up four runs on two hits and a pair of walks in four innings of work. He struck out five batters.
 
Ajani Johnson had two singles for the Bears.
 
Down 5-0 in game two, the Bears scored their only run in the bottom of the 4th inning when Mason Barker reached base on a two-out double past the shortstop and scored on Jonathan Havard's two-out double.
 
Chase Guitreau was saddled with the loss for the Bears, allowing five runs on eight hits and a walk in 3.1 innings on the mound. He struck out eight batters.
 
Gregory had two doubles and a single for the Bears.

The Bears are set to hit the diamond again on February 6 when they host the Hinds Eagles in a 1:00 doubleheader.
