Johnson gets 100th win as Lady Bears split with Holmes

The Lady Bears split a non-conference doubleheader with visiting Holmes Community College Tuesday afternoon, taking game one 10-3 before falling 3-2 . Game two went eight innings.

The game-one win was a historic one for Lady Bears head coach Shea Johnson as it was his 100th at Southwest.

A two-RBI single from Ashleigh Rowland (the first of her three hits), a Nan Gatlin run-scoring double, a Macie Miley RBI base hit and a Holmes error helped the Lady Bears (4-2) lead 5-0 after the first inning.

The Lady Bears added a single run in the second inning, two in the third and one more in the 4th to take a 9-0 lead.

Holmes (5-1) avoided the shutout with three runs in the top of the 5th to make the score 9-3. The Lady Bears then picked up the final run of the game on a Madison Moak RBI-base hit in the 6th.

Jensen Gremillion picked up the win in the circle. In 6.2 innings, she surrendered four hits while walking four and striking out six.

Bailey Buckley had two hits in the game.

Game two was scoreless until Holmes scored solo runs in the 6th and 7th innings to move out to a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the 7th, Jade Latham blasted a lead-off homer to left field and Madison Moak drove in a run with a double to tie the game at 2-2.

An RBI double in the top of the 8th gave Holmes what proved to be the winning run.

Latham took the loss in the circle, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk. She struck out seven batters.

Maggie Magee singled twice in the game.

The Lady Bears will hit the diamond again on February 24 when they host Crowder College (Neosho, MO) at 1:00 and Mississippi Delta at 5:00. The two visiting schools will face each other at 3:00.
