It was somewhat of a bittersweet night for the Lady Bears as they fell on the road at Pearl River, 74-50, Monday night.

The loss dropped the Lady Bears to 15-7 overall and 8-5 in the MACJC South. Despite the loss, the Lady Bears remained in 2nd place in the South and they also clinched a berth in next week's MACJC tournament due to Co-Lin's loss to Meridian.

Pearl River moved to 14-8, 7-6.

A Jade Myles layup gave the Lady Bears an early 2-0 lead in the opening quarter. With 3:23 on the clock, they took an 8-4 lead following a pair of D'Mya Wilson free throws and they were on top 8-7 at the end of the quarter.

The teams traded baskets throughout the second quarter. The Lady Bears matched their largest lead of the game, at 19-15, on a Wilson bucket with 4:10 on the clock.

Pearl River outscored the Lady Bears 7-3 the rest of the quarter to send the teams into intermission deadlocked at 22-22.

Trailing 25-24, an old-fashioned three-point play from Taylor Ben put the Lady Bears on top 27-25 with 9:41 still to play in the third quarter.

Pearl River then went on a 14-2 run to move ahead 39-29 with 5:34 showing. They then took a 51-39 lead into the fourth quarter.

Pearl River would outscore the Lady Bears 23-11in the final quarter on their way to recording the win.

"Obviously, tonight was disappointing," said Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris. "We did not respond to their runs. We gambled with the press and they made us pay on the other end. But, we have qualified for the state tournament. We (just) need to compete harder for ourselves."

Ben, Myles, Wilson, Alexus Marsh and Shylia McGee all scored seven points to lead the Lady Bears. As a team, the Lady Bears went 9-20 at the free throw line.

Pearl River's Mychala Linzy led all scorers with 24 points. She and her teammates made 13 of 15 free throws.

The Lady Bears close out the regular season Thursday night in Decatur as they take on the Lady Warriors of East Central. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30.
