Bears fall short against visiting Jones

Despite turning in their best offensive performance of the season, the Bears unfortunately came up short Thursday night as they fell to the visiting Jones Bobcats 40-27 in John I. Hurst Stadium.
 
The Bears took a 7-0 first-quarter lead with 10:23 on the clock. After a KeMari Clark fumble recovery at the Bears' 21 yard-line, freshman quarterback Brandon Edmondson completed a pass to Dalyn McDonald who then raced 79 yards to the end zone. Josh Massa booted the extra point.
 
A two-yard run by the Bobcats' Paul Hughes, with 4:23 on the clock, and Gavin Gaudin's PAT left the teams knotted at 7-7 at the end of the first 15:00 of play.
 
The Bobcats (2-1) outscored the Bears 20-6 in the second quarter to take a 27-13 lead into intermission. A 62-yard run by Edmondson, following a Carl Myers blocked field goal attempt, accounted for the Bears' score. The extra point attempt failed.
 
Two touchdowns in the third quarter left the Bobcats with a 40-13 advantage.
 
The Bears (0-3) recorded the only points of the final quarter with Lyric Hall connecting with Vakeilon Campbell for touchdowns of 31 and 7 yards. Hall completed a pass to Ortez Head, Jr., for a two-point conversion after the first touchdown.
 
The Bears picked up 310 offensive yards on the night. Campbell led the way with 83 rushing yards on 9 carries. Edmondson ran for one score.
 
Through the air, the Bears completed 7 of 26 passes for 130 yards. Hall was 5-17 for 53 yards and a pair of touchdowns while Edmondson went 2-3 for 77 yards and a touchdown.  Campbell hauled in a pair of passes for 38 yards and two touchdowns while McDonald had a 79-yard touchdown catch.
 
The Bears had 13 first downs in the game and were penalized 10 times for 96 yards. Massa averaged 42 yards on 6 punts.
 
The Bobcats picked up 553 yards offensive yards. Quaterius Hawkins led the way with 299 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 21 of 29 passing. Romal Webb carried the ball 23 times for 172 yards and a pair of scores.
 
The Bobcats recorded 26 first downs in the game and were whistled for 10 penalties for 84 yards. Gaudin punted 3 times for 39.3 yards.
 
The Bears return to the gridiron on October 29 in Raymond when the visit the Hinds Eagles. Kickoff is set for 6:30.
