Bears defeated at home by 17th-ranked Jones

The Bears took one on the chin Thursday night as they were defeated by the 17th-ranked Jones Bobcats, 34-6, in MACJC South Division in Summit.
 
Jones held a 7-0 lead after one quarter, scoring on a 28-yard carry by Kalyn Grandberry. Cristofer Thompson booted the PAT.
 
The score went to 14-0 with 14:53 left in the second quarter when Fred Barnum connected with Brodie King for a 34-yard touchdown pass. Thompson again added the PAT.
 
Da'Bryan Magee darted into the end zone from one-yard out, with 6:34 on the second quarter clock, to give the Bears their only score of the night. Magee ended the night with 24 rushing yards on seven carries. The extra point attempt was unsuccessful, leaving the Bears trailing 14-6.
 
Two more Grandberry touchdown runs in the second quarter, and one PAT from Thompson, left the visitors with a 27-6 lead at the end of the first half.
 
Jones (3-2, 2-1) then added the final score of the night in the third quarter to reach the final margin of victory.
 
Zarious Keyes carried the ball 8 times for 42 yards to lead the Bears' (0-5, 0-3) ground game.  Magee was 3 of 7 passing for 47 yards.
 
The Bears had 11 first downs in the game and were whistled for 23 yards on three penalties. Jack Runnels punted 10 times for a 33.1 average.
 
Grandberry led the Jones offense with 192 rushing yards, and three touchdowns, on 28 carries. Barnum was 8 of 9 through the air for 134 yards and two touchdowns. He was intercepted once.
 
Jones recorded 24 first downs in the game and was penalized seven times for 65 yards. Greg Hayden averaged 38 yards on two punts.
 
The Bears take to the road for their next contest as they visit the 4th-ranked Mississippi Gulf Coast Bulldogs in Perkinston. Kickoff in A. L. May Memorial Stadium is set for 2:00.
