Bears drop a close one at 19th-ranked Hinds

The Bears gave the 19th-ranked Hinds Eagles all they wanted Thursday night in Raymond, but it was not enough as the hosts ended the night with a 10-0 MACJC South Division win.
 
The Eagles (3-1, 1-1) scored the only points of the first half when Jack Garrad completed an eight-yard pass to Joe'vonte Shorter with 9:57 left on the first quarter clock. Conner Smith booted the extra point to put the home team ahead 7-0.
 
The score remained the same until the fourth quarter when Smith closed out a short four-play drive with a 22-yard field goal.
 
Keyvont Baines topped the Bears' offense with 76 yards on 7 of 16 passing. Gerkithis McCray and Demarius Turner both had two receptions for 30 and 21 yards, respectively.
 
Zarious Keyes carried the ball 17 times for 72 yards to lead the Bears' ground game.
 
The Bears recorded 13 first downs in the game and were penalized 10 times for 60 yards. Jack Runnels averaged 34.6 yards on five punts.
 
Garrard completed 10 of 20 passes for 68 yards to lead the Eagles' offense. Javion Antonio carried the ball four times for 37 yards.
 
The Eagles had 12 first downs in the game and were penalized six times for 37 yards. Houston Smith punted six times for a 42 yard average.
 
The Bears (0-4, 0-2) are at home for their next contest as the host the 13th-ranked Jones Bobcats. Kickoff is set for 7:00 at John I. Hurst Stadium.
