Gordon runs and pitches Bears to game two win, split at Coahoma

Batting in a game for the first time since his senior year in high school, sophomore pitcher Lane Gordon made the most of his first collegiate opportunity Friday night as he singled and scored the eventual winning run in the top of the 10th inning as the Bears won a 10-9 marathon at Coahoma in game two of their MACJC doubleheader. The host Tigers won the opener 8-3.
 
Gordon also got the job done on the mound for the Bears in the finale, pitching six scoreless innings in relief to get the win. He surrendered three hits and walked two while striking out four.
 
The Bears got RBI doubles from Logan Larrimore and Tucker Watts, a run-scoring single from Britt Netterville and a Will Ford sacrifice fly to take a 4-0 first-inning lead in the nightcap. Larrimore later added a single while Netterville had two additional base hits.
 
After seeing the Tigers (18-16, 4-12) take a 5-4 lead, the Bears added five runs in the top of the second to regain the lead, 9-5. Watts drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk and Ford scored two with the first of his three base hits; Watts then scored on a Netterville ground out and Ford on an error.
 
The Tigers scored a run in the bottom of the third and three in the fifth to tie the game at 9-9. With neither team able to score in the 6th or 7th innings, the game went into extra frames. The game remained tied through the eighth and ninth innings.
 
Batting in the 10th due to the Bears having "killed" the designated hitter earlier in the game, Gordon lined his hit to right field before moving to third on back-to-back walks and scoring on Ford's second sacrifice fly of the game.
 
A sacrifice fly by Paco Bello and Michael Buck's RBI single gave the Bears (12-19, 4-14) a 2-0, first-inning lead in the opener.
 
With the game tied 2-2 in the top of the third, the Bears went on top 3-2 on an RBI double from Bello.
 
That proved to be the Bears' final run of the game. The Tigers tied the game at 3-all in the bottom of the third and added three runs in the fifth plus two more in the sixth on their way to the win.
 
Brendon Baker took the loss on the mound in relief, giving up three runs (one earned) on six hits in two innings. He struck out one batter.
 
Zach Dearman had two singles in the game for the Bears.
 
The Bears return home for their next contests, hosting 7th-ranked Pearl River on Tuesday in a 3:00 conference doubleheader.
