Softball | 4/10/2019 6:43:00 AM

The Lady Bears survived a late-game rally by the East Central Lady Warriors Tuesday afternoon to win game one of their MACJC doubleheader 9-7. East Central won a pitcher's duel in the finale, 2-1, to achieve a split in the series.

The split left the Lady Bears with a 22-7 overall mark, tying the team-record for wins in a season, and 9-5 in the MACJC. East Central moved to 15-11, 8-6.

Tia Bussey led off the game for the Lady Bears with a walk and scored two batters later on a ground out for a 1-0 lead. An RBI double from Terrah Nelson in the bottom of the second then made the score 2-0.

After East Central put a run on the board in the top of the third, an error and RBI single by Madison Gower gave the Lady Bears two runs and a 4-1 advantage. Gower later added another single.

The Lady Bears seemed to put the game out of reach in their half of the fourth when they added five runs to move out to a 9-1 lead. The big blow of the inning came when Terrah Nelson blasted an 0-2 pitch over the centerfield fence for her second hit of the game.

East Central began their comeback attempt with three runs in the top of the fifth to make the score 9-4. They then added three more in the sixth inning before the Lady Bears stopped the rally and went on to record the win.

Jordan McNabb pitched four innings in the circle, giving up three runs on four hits and three walks, to pick up the win. She struck out one batter. Jade Latham struck out one batter in 1.1 innings to get the save.

Josey Nations had a double and single for the Lady Bears.

The Lady Bears trailed 2-0 in the nightcap before picking up their only run, on a Carrington Jefcoat line drive double, in the bottom of the sixth.

Latham took the loss in the circle despite striking out five batters and giving up only two runs on six hits and a pair of walks in seven innings.

Makennah Redd had a double for the Lady Bears.

The Lady Bears stay at home for their next contest, hosting the Lady Indians of Itawamba Friday afternoon beginning at 2:00.
