The Bears' late rally fell just short Friday evening in game one of their MACJC doubleheader at 18th-ranked Northwest as they fell 12-11. Northwest also took game two, winning 13-1 in five innings.

The Bears took a 1-0 second-inning lead in the opener when Michael Buck reached base on a lead-off walk and scored later on a passed ball. Northwest then put two runs on the board in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead.

In the Bears' third, Zach Dearman led off with a single (he also doubled and had a second single in the game) and later crossed the plate to tie the game at 2-2. Northwest answered with three runs in their half of the inning to regain the lead, 5-2.

Adding two runs in the fourth inning and four in the fifth, Northwest increased their lead to 11-2.

The Bears (10-13, 2-8) began their comeback attempt in the top of the seventh. Buck scored two runs with a single while Tucker Watts had an RBI-single (the first of his two hits) and Paco Bello had a sacrifice fly to make the score 11-6.

In the Bears' eighth, Buck and Bello both had a run-scoring double to pull the Bears to within 11-8.

With the score 12-8 in the top of the ninth, Buck doubled to drive home two runs and pinch-runner Aaron Ragsdale scored on a sacrifice fly to pull the Bears to within 12-11. Unfortunately, the tying run was left on base as Northwest held on for the win.

Matthew Graves took the loss on the mound, giving up seven runs (five earned) on eight hits and a walk in 3.1 innings. He struck out five batters.

The Bears went up 1-0 in the top of the first in the finale when DJ Lewis reached base on a one-out single, the first of his two hits in the game, and scored on Buck's base hit.

Northwest (18-6, 7-3) took a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the first and would add two runs in the second and six in the third to pick up the win.

Daren Smith took the loss on the mound. In 1.2 innings, he gave up seven runs on five hits and four walks while striking out three.

The Bears return to action on April 2 in Wesson as they face Co-Lin in the final games of the Coca-Cola Baseball Challenge. Game one of the two-game conference set is scheduled for a 3:00 first pitch.
