Bears open season with doubleheader split at Louisiana College

The Bears took advantage of timely hitting, good pitching and home team errors in defeating the Louisiana College Wildcats JV squad 7-1 in game two of their season-opening doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Pineville, LA. The Wildcats took game one 3-0.
 
The Bears used a pair of walks, a passed ball and a Michael Buck double to take a 3-0 first-inning lead in the nightcap (Buck would go on to add two singles). The score went to 4-0 in the Bears' second when Will Ford was hit by a pitch with two outs and later scored on a passed ball.
 
With the Bears (1-1) on top 4-1 in the top of the sixth, DJ Lewis drove in a run on his second hit of the game while Landon Stewart, on base via a base hit, scored on a double play to increase the Bears' advantage to 6-1.
 
The final run of the game came in the top of the seventh when Buck, on base after being hit by a pitch to start the frame, scored on a Reid Havard sacrifice fly.
 
Matthew Graves picked up the win on the mound, giving up an unearned run on a pair of hits, while striking out three batters, in 1 1/3 innings of work. Rigell Robinson struck out four batters while giving up a hit and walking two in 3 2/3 innings of relief while Keith McKigney gave up a hit and struck out one in one inning on the mound.
 
In the opener, the Wildcats scored the only run they would need in their half of the second and went on to claim the shutout win.
 
The loss for the Bears came despite the performance of sophomore Daren Smith. In his three innings on the mound, Smith struck out seven batters while giving up an unearned run on three hits and a pair of walks.
 
The Bears return to the diamond on February 13 with a 3:00 twin bill at Baton Rouge Community College.
